HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Girard's Petracca throws a no-hitter



He walked the first batter he faced, then struck out 16 in a 1-0 win over Brookfield.
GIRARD -- Junior Shawn Petracca, who was only scheduled to pitch four innings, tossed his first career no-hitter, striking out 16 after walking the game's first batter as Girard beat Brookfield 1-0 in a Trumbull Athletic Conference baseball game Thursday.
Petracca, who was making his first start in almost two weeks after injuring his knee, improved to 2-0.
The Indians (7-2) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Randy Mason led off with a single and Greg Cook sacrificed him to second. Mason stole third and came home on a passed ball.
Boardman 8, Mooney 1: YOUNGSTOWN -- Giancarlo Silvestri had a double and a triple and Sean Curry added three hits for Boardman (6-0, 4-0 Steel Valley Conference).
Tom Zetts added a triple and three RBIs and Andy Good had two hits and two RBIs for the Spartans. Dan Cashon had three hits for Mooney (1-6, 0-3).
Niles 3, Fitch 2: NILES -- Niles scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Fitch (6-4).
With one out, Kyle Barker and Matt Baritell both singled for the Red Dragons and moved up on a passed ball. Joe Skocik hit an RBI single and Travis Fussleman reached on a fielder's choice as Baritell was thrown out trying to score. Matt Brown reached on an error that scored Skocik. Fussleman scored on a throwing error after Skocik stole second.
Brian Baughman improved to 3-0 and Barker had two hits. Kevin Pontius and Nick Howley each had two hits for Fitch.
On Wednesday, Fitch beat Warren Harding 3-2, scoring three runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Dan Klipse and an RBI single by Howley. Tyson Rowland had a two-run double for the Raiders (5-3, 2-1).
Canfield 9, Harding 2: WARREN -- Dave Miller went 3-for-3 with two doubles for Canfield (8-3).
Dan Leonard and Nick Guerrieri had two hits, Mike Turjanica had a home run and Tim Dewberry had a triple for the Cardinals. Mike Witheron had two hits for Harding (6-3).
Newton Falls 10, Liberty 2: LIBERTY -- Derek Lance collected three singles, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Tigers (4-5, 2-2 TAC). Darren Brounce and Brian Fish each had two singles.
Fred Battista hit a home run in the second inning and Joe Lopez hit a double in the third for Liberty (2-3, 1-3).
Howland 14, Salem 2: SALEM -- Justin Byler struck out nine, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and every Howland hitter got at least one hit.
Byler had two doubles, two runs and two RBIs for the Tigers (3-3, 2-2 Metro Athletic Conference). Salem dropped to 3-7, 0-3.
Southington 6, Bristol 4: BRISTOLVILLE -- Southington scored the deciding runs, two, in the top of the sixth inning.
Mike Pflager paced the Wildcats (2-2, 2-1 East Suburban Conference) with three singles, while Tim Grimm and Dominic Chiarella hit two singles apiece.
Columbiana 11, Leetonia 0: LEETONIA -- Nate Shaw struck out seven and walked one -- in the third inning -- to earn his first varsity no-hitter.
Shaw added two hits, a run and two RBIs for Columbiana (7-2, 6-1 Tri-County League). Drew Bland added three hits and two RBIs.
Mineral Ridge 4, McDonald 2: MINERAL RIDGE -- With the scored tied 2-2, Mineral Ridge's (5-5, 4-1) Pete Goche singled in the fifth inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a double by Mike Buckner, who moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a balk.
Nate Zimmerman went the distance and struck out seven to pick up the win.
Youngstown Christian 15, Rayen 12: YOUNGSTOWN -- Eight pitchers were used and there were 17 runs and 35 hits as Youngstown Christian (2-2) outlasted Rayen.
Peter Martiotta paced Youngstown Christian with two doubles and he drove in four runs.
Winning pitcher Eric Bader hit a double, single, drove in three runs and scored three times.
Northwest 2, West Branch 1: CANAL FULTON -- Josh Scott had a double and a run for West Branch. Matt Martig added an RBI single for the Warriors (5-4, 2-3 Northeastern Buckeye Conference).
