9 arrested in drug raids
YOUNGSTOWN -- Members of the Youngstown Police Department vice squad used search warrants to raid three homes Thursday and made nine arrests. Officers arrested two men at 1916 Elm St. and collected marijuana, cash and a loaded handgun. At 486 St. Louis Ave., three men were arrested and officers confiscated heroin, crack cocaine, a loaded handgun and cash. At 3008 Southern Boulevard, police arrested four men and collected marijuana, cash, crack and two loaded handguns.
Woman wounded
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 19-year-old Kenmore Avenue woman was treated Thursday at Forum Health Beeghly Medical Park after being shot in the 100-block of East Florida Avenue. Darneise Coggins suffered a bullet wound to her left wrist and was grazed on her right leg as she stood on a front porch at 12:34 p.m. A witness said the victim was hit by gunfire from a car, which was intended for someone else, and that the shooting stemmed from a feud over an East Side homicide.
Lawyer on state panel
YOUNGSTOWN -- Atty. Kim F. Akins of Youngstown has been appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court's Commission on Continuing Legal Education. The 19-member commission, consisting of judges and attorneys from the various appellate districts in the state, accredits continuing legal education programs and activities for licensed attorneys in Ohio. The appointment is for a three-year renewable term.
Deputy sues major
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County deputy sheriff is seeking $750,000 from Maj. Michael Budd of the county sheriff's department in a lawsuit filed Wednesday in common pleas court. John Boggs of Boardman, a deputy since 1991, says Budd was behind criminal charges filed against him in Struthers Municipal Court in 1999. The charges stemmed from a fight Boggs had with a motorist in Struthers and were dismissed in March 2000. Budd declined to comment.
Block watch meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Northside Eagle Eye Block Watch will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in New Grace Missionary Baptist Church. A representative from the Mahoning County Board of Elections will be available to explain and demonstrate the use of the new voting machines and a representative from Mahoning Valley Dispute Resolution Services will be a speaker.
Sentenced for assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- Anthony J. Antonas, 21, of Howell Drive, Poland, was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday by Judge Jack Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Antonas had pleaded guilty to felonious assault in February. According to court records, Antonas assaulted Jared Ingram of Boardman outside a Market Street bar in November. Ingram was knocked to the ground and kicked several times in the head as he lay unconscious.
Grant for van
YOUNGSTOWN -- Addiction Programs of Mahoning County received a $17,900 grant from the Youngstown Foundation for the purchase of a van to transport clients of the Donofrio Addiction Rehabilitation Men's and Women's Centers. APMC is a nonprofit agency that provides chemical dependency services.
Landscape trailer stolen
CANFIELD -- Buckeye Lawn Service on state Route 46 reported the theft of a black 18-foot landscape trailer worth $2,300. The trailer was taken between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday. The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
Business vandalized
AUSTINTOWN -- Vandals using a BB or pellet gun shot out the windshield of four cars and a window at Superb Pre-owned Auto Sales, 64 S. Meridian Road, after after 5 p.m. Wednesday. The business owner discovered the damage around 2 p.m. Thursday.
