NILES -- Youngstown State swept a doubleheader from Detroit at Cafaro Field Wednesday, beating the Titans 10-2 and 8-5.
The Penguins (9-14, 3-2 Horizon) scored seven runs in the first three innings of game one -- including four in the first -- and took advantage of Jonathan Smart's relief effort for the eight-run win. In game two, YSU scored twice in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the sweep over the Titans (6-18, 2-4).
YSU pitcher Frank Santore lasted only the first inning of game one after taking a line drive off Brian Wilson's bat in the face. Santore stayed in the game to strike out Zak Voit before leaving the contest with a non-displaced fracture in his jaw and could be out for three weeks.
Kyle Penrod had three hits and scored two runs while Kendall Schlabach, Jim Lipinski and Ty Furino had two hits each.
The Penguins play host to Cleveland State at Cafaro Field for a four-game series this weekend. The teams will play a single game Friday at 7 p.m., a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
Women's Golf
WARREN -- Despite freshman Gina Abbruzino's medalist round of 72, Youngstown State finished second at the YSU Invitational at Avalon South Golf Course.
The Penguins, who shot a team-round of 306, finished one shot behind St. Francis (Pa.). Cleveland State finished with 423.
Senior Stephanie Matasek tied for second with a 75 while Nichole Hamstreet finished seventh with a 79 and Jenny Grossi shot 80 to finish in eighth place.
Women's hoops
YOUNGSTOWN -- Michelle Holmes, a senior at Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, signed a national letter of intent with Youngstown State.
Holmes, a 6-foot-2 center, led Oak Hills with a 12.5 scoring average and 7.5 rebounds per game. She shot 56 percent from the field. The team was 39-7 the last two years.
She becomes the fourth new recruit for the Penguins, joining Boardman's Ashlee Russo, Nicole Neha of Manchester, and Alyiah Sabree of Detroit.

Four womenon football team
CLEVELAND -- Four area residents will be in action when the Cleveland Fusion entry in the Professional Women's Football League opens play later this week.
Denise Naples of Niles is a quarterback with the team, Danielle Carson of Youngstown will play defensive end, Paulina Reese McCallum of Youngstown will play defensive tackle and Girard's Lori Johnson is also with the team.
The Fusion will play its first game at the South Bend Golden Hawks on Saturday. The first home game is against the Michigan Jaguars at Bedford Stadium at 7:05 p.m. For details, call (216) 406-0106.

NEW YORK -- Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles will lead the United States in its return to the Fed Cup.
Capriati, No. 1 in the world rankings, will team with former world No. 1 Seles, Lisa Raymond and Meghann Shaughnessy when the U.S. team faces Austria in Charlotte, N.C., on April 27-28.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Separate shot put accidents at two Indiana high schools have left two students with head injuries.
Craig Hilldebrand, 18, of Huntington North remained in critical condition, one day after being hit on the side of the head by a 12 1/2-pound shot during a meet.
On Monday afternoon, seventh-grader Aaron Thompson was struck behind his right ear during practice.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indy Racing League driver Eliseo Salazar was in stable condition after surgery to repair a torn artery in his chest, one day after crashing during a private practice session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for next month's Indianapolis 500.

LONDON -- The investigation into the use of blood-transfusion equipment by members of Austria's Olympic cross-country ski team has ruled out the involvement of any medalists.
IOC president Jacques Rogge told The Associated Press that the probe has found that three Austrian competitors received blood transfusions during the Salt Lake City Olympics, but none were medal winners.

PARIS -- Russia's Larissa Lazutina, stripped of a gold medal at the Salt Lake City Olympics after testing positive for a banned substance, reportedly failed drug tests performed in December.
The French newspaper daily L'Equipe reported that Lazutina tested positive for the endurance-increasing drug darbepoetin in December.

* CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Top-ranked Jennifer Capriati, playing on clay for the first time since winning the 2001 French Open, beat Janette Husarova 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the Family Circle Cup.
Capriati, the defending champion, overcame 43 unforced errors to advance to the third round.
In a third-round match, third-seeded Serena Williams beat Nathalie Dechy 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
