CORTLAND Council OKs work on street lights

Twelve mercury vapor lights will be replaced with high pressure sodium lights.
CORTLAND -- City council passed two emergency ordinances submitted by Service Director Paul Makosky to allow Ohio Edison to improve and standardize lighting on South High Street.
One ordinance covers the area north of the post office; the other, the area south of the post office.
Ohio Edison will replace and relocate street lighting on South High, north of the post office to the intersection of Main Street. Ten light mast arms will be extended out to 20 feet and 12 mercury vapor street lights will be replaced with high pressure sodium lights, which Makosky says are 31/2 times brighter. The poles will be relocated on this section of the street. The annual operation cost will increase from $175.56 to $526.56.
On the area south of the post office, four new lights will be added and two existing lights will be changed to use the high pressure sodium lights. This will increase the annual cost of operation from $204.60 to $263.16. When these lighting changes are complete, Makosky said the lighting will be uniform on the entire street.
In other business, council approved:
UA $4,795 contract with Adam Pavement Marking of Hubbard to stripe the city's roads.
UA $6,000 contract with Alexander's Pest Control of Poland to spray the city for mosquito control. Spraying is set to begin May 22 and planned for the first and third Wednesdays of the summer months ending Sept. 4.
Council meets the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 400 North High Street.
