PREP SOFTBALL Fitch works 10 innings for win



A key defensive play led the Falcons to their first victory this season.
AUSTINTOWN -- Moments after making a game-saving defensive play, Austintown Fitch High's Julie Rygrut was the Falcons' offensive hero in a 5-4, 10-inning win over Chaney on Monday.
Rygrut snagged a line drive and tagged a Chaney runner out at third base for the final out in the top of the 10th. Rygrut was placed on second to start the bottom of the inning (after nine innings, a tie-breaker rule places the lead-off batter on second) and after two walks moved her to third, she scored on a passed ball to give Fitch (1-3) its first win.
Jen Ragusa went 3-for-5 for Fitch.
Mooney 14, Ursuline 1: YOUNGSTOWN -- Melissa LaRosa had eight strikeouts and one walk to improve to 3-0 for Mooney.
Freshman Gina Burnetti had two hits, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs. Kristen Laskowski had two hits for Mooney (6-1, 3-1 Steel Valley Conference) and Adrianne Detesco and Chakenya Howell each scored three runs. Ursuline fell to 3-4, 1-1.
Boardman 15, Warren Harding 1: BOARDMAN -- Gina Rango had four hits, two runs and an RBI and Jaclyn Corroto had three hits, three runs and four RBIs for Boardman (8-1, 4-0 SVC).
Jennifer Feret had two hits, including a home run, three RBIs and two runs for the Spartans. Mary McCabe had two hits and two runs, and Laura Amero had two hits, two runs and an RBI. Ashley DiDomenico (2-0) and Jennifer Pancake combined for 10 strikeouts.
Harding fell to 1-4, 0-3.
Poland 10, Salem 0: SALEM -- Jessie Lamport pitched a one-hitter, struck out 13 and walked one, leading Poland to its victory in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
The Bulldogs (7-1, 3-0 MAC) scored one run in the first inning, another in the second, then broke open the contest by scoring four more runs in the fifth.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Terrin Tamati of Salem hit a single to break up the no-hit bid.
Kristy Gaudiose of Poland hit two singles, drove in three runs and scored twice.
Katie Naumoff hit two singles, scored three runs and drove in one, while Steffi Graf singled twice, drove in two runs and scored once.
West Branch 12, Struthers 0: BELOIT -- Jen Griffith went 4-for-4, while Diedre Snively ad Ellie Geiger each had three hits for the Warriors (7-1).
Evelyn Woods and Carissa Wayland also had two hits apiece for West Branch. The Wildcats are 2-4.
Mineral Ridge 16, Lowellville 0: MINERAL RIDGE -- Katie Olive, Ashley Ault and Kristi Padovani each hit two singles for Mineral Ridge (5-2, 2-1 Inter-County League).
The Rams took a 5-0 lead in the second inning and Lowellville couldn't bounce back.
The Rockets (0-6) had just one hit, a single in the fifth inning.
Kaili Gehring (1-0) worked five innings to pick up the win.
Girard 6, Badger 5: GIRARD -- With two out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Girard's Shannon Slezyak and Beth Carney hit back-to-back doubles, with Slezyak scoring the deciding run. Slezyak also hit a single for the Indians (1-4, 1-4 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Jenn Letcher paced Badger with three singles, while Courtney Landis hit a double and single and Katie Brainard two singles.
