GM Lordstown to add overtime shifts

LORDSTOWN -- The General Motors' Lordstown Assembly Plant is adding overtime shifts because of demand for the cars produced there.
Overtime shifts have been added May 18, June 1 and June 8, in addition to the overtime already scheduled May 4 and May 11.
Two of the plant's three shifts are scheduled each of those Saturdays. The plant has about 4,300 hourly workers. Other GM plants have been forced to cut production by reducing line speed or laying off workers, but the Lordstown plant has been working extra on some Saturdays in recent months.
Sales of the Chevrolet Cavalier rose slightly last month, but are down 12 percent for the first four months of this year. Pontiac Sunfire sales were off 33 percent last month and are down 23 percent for the first four months of this year.
Demand for the cars could increase if gasoline prices continue to rise, officials of United Auto Workers Local 1112 told workers in a flier released Monday.
