Fatal Greenville crash
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Gary L. Riley, 47, of Vosler School Road died after suffering severe head injuries in a one-car accident on Greenville-Sheakleyville Road, said Deputy Coroner Chris Loutzenhiser.
State police said Riley lost control of his truck about 2:30 p.m. Friday. The truck crashed into a hillside and rolled over, police said. Riley was taken to UPMC Greenville, where he died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the deputy coroner said.
Scott Township fight
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- State police said two men are accused of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct after a fight at a Scott Township home Sunday.
Police said an 18-year-old Ellwood City man is accused of trying to stab the homeowner, a 36-year-old man. Another 18-year-old, who is from New Castle, apparently attempted to hit a 55-year-old Pittsburgh man with a baseball bat, they said.
Both teen suspects are in the Lawrence County Jail. They were expected to be arraigned later today before District Justice David Rishel.
The Ellwood City man also faces charges of simple assault, underage drinking, criminal mischief and two drug violations, police said. The condition of the victims was not available from police.
Osteoporosis program
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- "Build Upon the Basics: An Osteoporosis Exercise Program" is the topic of a free lecture from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Womancare Center of UPMC, Horizon, 875 N. Hermitage Road.
Participants also will receive free heel screenings for bone mineral density. The lecture is included in a six-part bone health and osteoporosis prevention education series at the center every Tuesday evening through May 7. Upcoming lectures will cover nutrition, medicines and improving balance.
Burglary suspect
SHARON, Pa. -- A Farrell man faces charges after being chased by a homeowner who said his house was burglarized.
Terry Pompay, 20, of Hamilton Avenue was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Sunday by Sharon police and charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.
Police said they found on Pompay a Sony PlayStation, which was from a house on South Oakland Avenue, and two small bags of suspected crack cocaine. Police said the South Oakland Avenue homeowner chased Pompay after seeing him coming out of the house and calling 911. The homeowner caught Pompay a few blocks from his house and held him until police arrived.
House is shot up
SALEM -- A South Lincoln Avenue woman said she found two places on the north wall of her condominium possibly struck by shotgun pellets.
She made the report this morning. Police said her apartment is directly south of the apartment where residents reported shots fired about 3 a.m. Sunday. The man at that apartment said someone fired a shot through his front door and he returned fire with a shotgun, firing one round through the window of the door.
Police searched around the apartments but found no one in the area at the time. They advised the man against firing a weapon without a target and discharging a firearm in the city limits.
Car theft in Salem
SALEM -- A Leetonia man reported his dark blue 1978 Mercury Marquis stolen from the parking lot of Timberlanes. He reported the car missing about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
He said he parked the car in the Timberlanes lot, left it unlocked with the keys in the car. A computer and the man's wallet with $200 in cash were in the car, the man said.
Engagement ring gone
SALEM -- An Austintown woman said her engagement ring was taken from her purse without permission, and a woman she knows said she drove another woman to a Canton pawn shop, where she used an engagement ring to get a $70 loan.
The woman reported the ring missing about noon Saturday. She said it is valued at about $2,300.
