NEW WILMINGTON, PA. Notable poet to present talk, be honored at Westminster
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College will be host of a two-day celebration for Jon Stallworthy, an internationally recognized literary figure, at 7 p.m. April 24 and 25 in Wallace Memorial Chapel.
Stallworthy will deliver "Beating Time: The Survival of Poetry" April 24. His talk will examine why poetry speaks to our hearts, who reads it, and what can be done to make it more fully a part of daily life. He plans to use an Elizabeth Bishop painting and poem as a handout for examination.
Stallworthy will later receive an honorary doctor of literature degree from the college. A reception and book signing will follow his talk in the fourth-floor lobby of Thompson-Clark Hall.
Achievements: Stallworthy's accomplishments include the Oxford University Poetry Prize, the Newdigate Prize, the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the W.H. Smith Lit Prize, and the E.M. Forster Literary Award. He has published nine volumes of his poetry and translated the works of Russian poet Boris Pasternak. He also was an editor of the Norton Anthology of Poetry, Norton Anthology of English Literature, the Penguin Book of Love Poetry, and the Oxford Book of War Poetry.
