AUSTINTOWN -- "Men's Fitness at Work & amp; Play" is the focus of a men's health event offered by Humility of Mary Health Partners from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 4 at the Competitive Edge, 1739 S. Raccoon Road. There will be demonstrations of exercises to prevent back injury, tips for avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome, and warm-up and cool-down activities, as well as various health screenings by HMHP personnel. Cancer fund-raisers
CANFIELD -- The American Cancer Society's fifth annual Spin for a Cure event March 23 at Boardman Glenwood Middle School netted more than $50,000. Additionally, proceeds from the ACS's Kids Coins for Cancer Campaign at 25 schools in Mahoning County brought in more than $12,000. The top three student fund-raisers were: Bryon Freet, Austintown Middle School; Amanda Harmon, Springfield Intermediate School; and Kyle Fithian, Poland McKinley Elementary School. The money will be used for state and national cancer research, prevention and detection programs and quality-of-life support programs.
Diabetes management
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- St. Francis Hospital offers a diabetes self-management course taught by a certified diabetes educator and dietitian. The course meets May 2, 7, 9 and 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 1100 S. Mercer St. A physician's referral is necessary, and there is a fee which may be covered by insurance. To register, call (724) 654-5433 before April 30.
Kava risks face study
Kava, an herbal anti-anxiety supplement, is under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration for its possible link to liver damage.
The FDA is asking doctors to report any side effects from use of the supplement, but many doctors don't know (or don't ask) what kinds of herbal supplements their patients take.

Junior fair officers
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Junior Fair Board elected its officers for 2002 at a recent meeting. The officers are: president, Mark Miller; vice president, Brian Pigeon; secretary, Shannon Stanwood; assistant secretary, Paul Myers; and news reporter, Anna Kellgreen.
