KEYSTONE CLIPS Center presents book fair

The new Quinby Street Resource Center, 335 Quinby St., Sharon, will sponsor a book fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Mama's Lap Bookstore of Uniontown, Ohio, is the fair's host and will offer a variety of books for children from preschool through the sixth grade. Visitors can also buy and donate books to the new library at the center.
The center is owned by the Mercer County Housing Authority and houses a police substation and community service and educational programs designed to benefit residents of the authority's apartment complexes.
School defibrillators: Pennsylvania school districts have until April 30 to apply for free automated external defibrillators through a state department of education program. The defibrillators are used to treat people having a heart attack, and numerous police departments and other safety agencies in Mercer County carry them.
The state's General Assembly approved a $2.5 million program in May 2001 to give units to school districts free of charge, said Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th. If a district wants more than one of the units, it can apply to buy a second through the state at a reduced cost of $1,445, he said.
The defibrillators use an electric shock to restore a stable heart rhythm to someone experiencing cardiac arrest.
Parade sign-ups: Sponsors of the annual Memorial Day Parade in Sharon are looking for organizations to participate in the event May 27. There will be a C-130 cargo plane flyover from the U.S. Air Force Reserve at Vienna at 11:15 a.m. during the parade. Groups interested in participating should contact Bob Dach at (724) 347-2527.
PennDOT hot line: Motorists can report problems with state roads using the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's toll-free number, (800) 349-7623. The hot line operates year-round, and operators can field calls on any adverse condition on a state road or highway. The hot line is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. When the office is closed, callers can leave a message.
Catholic award: Janice Williams, a member of St. Camillus Church in Neshannock Township, received the Eagle of the Cross Award from the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese.
The award is given annually to high school juniors and seniors who have shown exemplary leadership skills, service, spirituality and involvement in their youth ministry programs, parishes or schools. Williams and 26 other youths received their awards from Bishop Donald Wuerl on April 9.
