NILES -- A fire on Lafayette Avenue destroyed two cars and a garage, causing damage to two other nearby garages, a patio and a pool.
Niles Fire Lt. Rodney Freel said the fire that started Friday at midnight in the unattached garage of 503 Lafayette Ave. remains under investigation. No one was injured.
The fire destroyed the garage, a 2001 Ford Explorer parked inside and a 1987 Dodge van parked next to it, Freel said. Also destroyed was carpet stored inside the van. Damaged were house windows and shingles, lawn furniture, a deck and a pool.
Unattached garages at 502 Lafayette Ave. and 511 Cherry St. also were damaged.
Firefighters had the blaze under control by 12:15 a.m. and remained on the scene until 1:30 a.m., Freel said.
Woman, son file suit
BROOKFIELD -- A Masury mother and her son are suing Brookfield Local School District and a shop class teacher.
Rhonda Stanish and David Stanish III, no street address available, filed the lawsuit Friday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. School officials had not seen the suit and wouldn't comment.
The Stanishes are seeking more than $25,000, saying David Stanish was attending shop class Nov. 6, 2001, when his teacher, Walter Kijowski, told him to use a table saw and to remove the safety guard.
The boy followed the instructions and suffered a partial amputation of his right middle finger, the lawsuit says.
Three to be honored
WARREN -- Trumbull County Children Services will honor three clients at its annual community breakfast.
Shelli Dermer Henderson of Warren, Colleen Valencic of Youngstown and Thomas Blackiston of Liberty will receive the agency's "Rising Up and Moving On," award at the breakfast, starting 8 a.m. Wednesday at DiLucia's Banquet Room.
Guest speaker will be Thom McDaniels, head football coach at Warren G. Harding High School.
Meeting change
McDONALD-- McDonald Board of Education has changed its regular April meeting from Thursday to Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.
