SOFTBALL Golden Flashes blank Niles



Southington, Struthers and South Range won.
NILES -- Jessica Carpenter scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and that run stood up as the Champion High softball team blanked Niles 1-0 Thursday in a non-league game.
Stephanie Weaver (3-0) scattered two hits, struck out 10 and walked two to pick up the win.
In the first inning, Carpenter singled, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Lauren Seafert. She then scored on the wild pitch for the Golden Flashes (4-0).
Ashley Byrom of Niles (1-3) allowed only five hits in a losing cause.
Southington 5, Maplewood 1: SOUTHINGTON -- The Wildcats broke up a 1-1 tie by scoring four runs in the fifth inning.
Lindsay Byer (2-2) scattered three hits, struck out 10 and walked seven to pick up the win.
Becca Derr of Southington (2-3) hit a triple and single, drove in three runs and scored once. Brittanie Gillium collected two hits and scored once.
Jenny Flinger hit a pair of singles for Maplewood (1-1).
Struthers 4, Springfield 1: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Wildcats scored the only runs they needed in the first inning when Loriel Singer scored on a wild pitch and Heather Hrina scored on a fielder's choice.
Singer (2-1) scattered five hits to pick up the win for the Wildcats (2-3). Allison Ginnetti hit two singles and scored a run.
Lindsay Johnson hit two singles to spark the Tigers (4-2). Ashley Platt (0-1) allowed only six hits.
South Range 4, Mathews 0: NORTH LIMA -- Jenn Toth fired a two-hitter, struck out 10 and walked only one batter to pick up the win.
Toth also hit a double and single for South Range (6-1, 3-0 Inter-County League) and scored once. Kelly James hit two singles, stole a base and scored a run.
McDonald 16, Lowellville 6: McDONALD -- The Blue Devils scored 14 runs in the first two innings to cruise to its first win in three tries.
In the second inning when it scored eight runs, McDonald sent 15 batters to the plate as winning pitcher Sarah Tepsich (1-0) hit two singles, drove in two runs and scored once.
Michelle Krumpak chipped in with three singles. She drove in two runs, stole a base and scored a run.
Phyllis Nigro of Lowellville hit a double and single to drive in three runs.
Mooney 4, Mineral Ridge 3: YOUNGSTOWN -- Melissa LaRosa scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single by freshman Dana Palazzo.
LaRosa finished with three singles and an RBI for the Cardinals (4-1), who stole a school record eight bases. The previous record was five.
Danielle Kepics (2-1) had two stolen bases and picked up the win in relief.
Ashley Ault had two hits for Mineral Ridge (3-2).
Jackson-Milton 3, Rootstown 2: NORTH JACKSON -- Stephanie Jeffrey scored the game-winning single for the Bluejays in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded RBI single by Nikki James.
Stephanie Rogenski was 3-for-3 with a double and two stolen bases for Jackson-Milton (2-1). Corey Velk and Courtney Reppy each had two hits.
Rootstown dropped to 2-4.
Canfield 2, Salem 0: CANFIELD -- Megan Turocy tossed a shutout to pick up her first win and Lindsay Yosay added two hits for Canfield.
Elizabeth Brown had a double for the Cardinals (1-5, 1-1 Metro Athletic Conference).
Boardman 7, Ursuline 1: YOUNGSTOWN -- Gina Rango (4-1) tossed a one-hitter, giving up an unearned run for Boardman (7-1, 2-0 Steel Valley Conference).
Jaclyn Corroto had three singles, two runs and an RBI for the Spartans and Laura Amero added three hits. Nine Boardman hitters got at least one hit.
Meghan Marenkovic had an RBI single for Ursuline (2-3, 0-1).
Hubbard 4, Girard 1: GIRARD -- Lynle Cornell had three hits to lead the Eagles in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Linda Huff added two hits for the Eagles (2-0).
Beth Carney had a double for Girard (0-4).
Lakeview 2, Newton Falls 1: NEWTON FALLS -- Heather Fink had 14 strikeouts and no walks to improve to 2-0.
Mandi Pringle added two hits for Lakeview (2-0).
Lindsey McCartney had eight strikeouts and no walks for Newton Falls (4-2). Desiree Sterling, Kellie Drake and Allison Huber each added two hits for the Tigers.
West Branch 7, Carrollton 1: BELOIT -- Trailing 1-0, West Branch scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Ellie Geiger led the Warriors with a double.
On Wednesday, West Branch lost to Canton South 5-4. Geiger hit two doubles.
