Salem to consider zoning plan for land

SALEM -- It's now up to city council whether to adopt a zoning plan for about 105 acres annexed last year.
The property lies north of state Route 14 across from the site of a Wal-Mart store to be built later this year on the city's east side.
Bruce Capel, a Salem real estate agent who's representing the property's owners, is asking that the land adjacent to state Route 14 be zoned commercial and that other parts be zoned for multi-family housing, said Pat Morrissey, planning and zoning officer.
No plans for the property, which has a township zoning of agricultural and residential, have been disclosed.
The city planning commission already has recommended the zoning change.
Council must schedule a public hearing then vote on the issue. The hearing and a vote could occur late this month or sometime in May, Morrissey said.
