SHARPSVILLE, PA. Council endorses grant application

Sharpsville would get two new bus passenger comfort stations in the deal.
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Borough council gave its support Monday to a plan by the Mercer County Regional Council of Governments to seek a federal transit grant of $6.2 million.
Sharpsville's portion of the funding would be small, but it would provide two additional passenger comfort stations on bus lines of the Shenango Valley Shuttle Service in the borough, council President Jack Cardwell said.
The borough has two comfort stations now and would pick the locations of the new stations, he said.
The plan calls for Sharpsville to get $72,000 from the grant to pay for 30-year leases on borough land for the new stations. The borough would then kick in $30,425 to the shuttle service to help pay the estimated $88,000 the two stations will cost. The borough will keep the balance of the $72,000.
The borough would handle all maintenance, cleaning and repair of the facilities.
The neighboring communities of Sharon, Farrell, Hermitage and Wheatland are also part of the grant application, but only Sharon has also voted so far to endorse the plan.
Remodeling: In other business, Sharpsville council authorized spending up to $18,000 to remodel the borough offices. Plans call for new windows and carpeting and some rearrangement of office space in the earth-sheltered structure built into the hillside at Walnut and Main streets.
