Man answers his doorbell and is greeted by a gunshot

SALEM -- Police are investigating a case in which someone fired a handgun at a man who answered his door in the middle of the night.
The man lives in an apartment over a garage on the 1100 block of South Lincoln Avenue. He told police that he was awakened shortly after midnight Wednesday by the ringing of his doorbell.
His apartment door is atop a stairway leading into a first-floor garage.
When the man answered his apartment door, he saw a flash of light and heard a bang from the bottom of the stairs.
He called police, who searched the area and found a bullet from a .25-caliber handgun on the garage floor.
Police suspect that the firearm was aimed in the man's direction from the bottom of the stairs.
The shot was off the mark; the bullet may have been deflected by a steel garage-door track, police said.
The man told police he could think of no reason why anyone would want to shoot at him.
