CLEVELAND Federal grand jury indicts Valley men

A Youngstown man was involved in a shootout with law enforcement officers last month, according to the indictment.
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury here has indicted several area people on charges ranging from distribution of crack cocaine to assault on a federal officer.
Carlos Calhoun, 27, of Idora Avenue, Youngstown, was indicted on two counts of crack cocaine distribution, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Calhoun is charged with distributing a total of almost 4 ounces of crack after an investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Youngstown office.
South Side shootout: The grand jury also indicted Newell Spann, 25, on charges of assaulting a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence during a March 4 shootout, which was followed by a vehicle pursuit on Youngstown's South Side.
Police charged Spann, last known to live on Franklin Street, with assault on Sgt. John Beshara, a Mahoning County deputy sheriff and a special deputy U.S. marshal, and Youngstown Patrolman Michael Cox with a .38-caliber handgun, the indictment says. There were no injuries.
If convicted on the gun charge, Spann faces a mandatory minimum 10 years imprisonment after he serves his sentence on the assault charge, the U.S. attorney said.
The officers were conducting an investigation for the Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force when the shootout occurred.
In another indictment, William J. Aikens, 26, of Buena Vista Avenue, Warren, is charged with unlawful transfer of a sawed-off shotgun, which is a violation of federal firearms laws.
