Man to be charged
WARREN -- Police and city prosecutors were conferring this morning on the type of charges they plan to file against a Cleveland man accused of crashing a stolen 1993 Ford Escort into a garage behind a Columbia Place home. The man is being held in the county jail.
Police believe he broke into the Willard Avenue home of an 83-year-old woman around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, tied her up and stole cash and her vehicle. The woman, who was not injured, was able to free herself and went to a neighbor's home to call police, reports state.
Police spotted the car and chased the man, who then crashed into the garage and fled. Police were able to apprehend the suspect as he hid inside a home on Columbia Place.
12 years for assault
WARREN -- An 18-year-old Hubbard man, who pleaded guilty to felonious assault, aggravated robbery and auto theft, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court sentenced Ken Hyatt during a brief hearing Tuesday. Hyatt could have received up to 19 1/2 years in prison, said Chuck Morrow, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor.
Hyatt was accused of assaulting George Kroynovich, 63, a clerk at Truck World Motor Inn in Hubbard Township on Aug. 18 and stealing his car. Kroynovich spent several days in the hospital.
Heart recipient
HUBBARD -- A friend of transplant recipient Christine Steele's says the Hubbard girl is rejecting her new heart. Christine, 16, daughter of Jack and Brigit Steele of Chestnut Ridge Road, received the heart Aug. 17 at the Cleveland Clinic.
Family friend Joni Summers said Tuesday the intermittent rejection means Christine may have to be put on the transplant list for a second heart.
The rejection has put added financial stress on the family, Summers said, because of increased medication and doctor's visits. There are funds at both National City and Cortland banks to help pay medical expenses.
Stipend idea dropped
WARREN -- Trumbull County Planning Commission members have decided not to pursue reimbursement for attending board and committee meetings.
Members raised the issue of a stipend at several recent board meetings, but voted unanimously Tuesday to drop it on the recommendation of the commission's executive committee.
Electric, gas choices
BROOKFIELD -- A representative of Ohio Consumers' Counsel will discuss electric and natural gas choice programs during a meeting at 6 p.m. May 7 at the township administration building.
The presentation will be geared toward residents of Brookfield, Vienna and Hubbard townships and Masury. The meeting will focus on how to shop for new electric and natural gas providers, consumer protection and how to make the transition to a new supplier successfully, said Brookfield Trustee Gary P. Lees. The information will include a list of suppliers and their rates, Lees said.
Steak fry benefit
LIBERTY -- Liberty Athletic Boosters, in cooperation with Outback Steakhouse in Niles, is sponsoring a steak fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. April 25 at the high school cafeteria. Proceeds will benefit boys and girls athletic programs.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased from booster members or George Gulgas, athletic director, (330) 759-1986.
Storm water cleanup
HUBBARD -- Hubbard Township trustees have initiated a storm water cleanup on state Route 304 and Laurel Park, co-funded by the city of Hubbard.
They have accepted the resignations of part-time police officers Mark Hymes and Nicholas Carney, both hired by the Warren Police Department, and the resignation of Robert Hogg, who was fire chief with the volunteer department for both the city and township.
The trustees set a Comprehensive Planning Committee special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school cafeteria to inform the public of the recent planning survey's results.
Faulty light caused fire
AUSTINTOWN -- Township firefighters have determined that a fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to Arby's Restaurant, 701 N. Canfield-Niles Road, last month was caused by a faulty neon light.
