SALEM -- Police are investigating a traffic accident in which an elderly woman apparently lost control of her car.
Nana Tarleton, 85, of South Madison Avenue, began backing her car out of her driveway at about 3 p.m. Monday, police said. The car continued traveling backward, crossing Madison Avenue and nearby Oak Street before hitting a tree, ejecting Tarleton. The car, which had not malfunctioned, traveled about 310 feet, police said.
Tarleton was taken to Cleveland Metro Health Center, where a report on her condition was unavailable this morning.
Ex-Steeler to speak
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Jon Kolb, an offensive lineman for the four Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl championship teams of the 1970s, will speak at 9 p.m. Monday at Westminster College in the Down Under.
A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Kolb is working at Sharon Regional Health System and coaching football at Grove City College.

Counterfeit-check ring
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- State police are looking into a counterfeit-check ring that is based in Uniontown, Pa.
State police said someone bought $1,000 worth of merchandise with several counterfeit checks March 21 at Wal-Mart in Union Township.
Police are warning other merchants to look out for the fake computer-generated checks, which are for the Smithfield State Bank in Smithfield, Pa. Several of these checks were also passed in Uniontown, Pa., they said.

32 face drug charges
ALIQUIPPA, Pa. (AP) -- Thirty-two people have been charged in a ring authorities said brought more than 1,300 pounds of cocaine worth $21.6 million into southwestern Pennsylvania from Arizona and Mexico in the last two years.
Michael Glanton, 29, of Phoenix, who formerly lived in Aliquippa, was described as the ringleader by Pennsylvania Attorney General Mike Fisher.
Glanton remained at large Tuesday, but 22 of the other suspects were apprehended and being arraigned throughout the day before District Justice Janet Swihart.
Fisher said his agents linked Glanton to a Crips street gang that is affiliated with groups in Arizona, California and Kansas.
A state grand jury determined that Glanton's alleged ring also brought marijuana and Ecstasy into southwestern Pennsylvania, Fisher said. Glanton got the drugs in Phoenix, and sometimes directly from sources in Mexico, Fisher said.
Heart recipient
HUBBARD -- A friend of transplant recipient Christine Steele's says the Hubbard girl is rejecting her new heart.
Christine, 16, daughter of Jack and Brigit Steele of Chestnut Ridge Road, received the heart Aug. 17 at the Cleveland Clinic.
Family friend Joni Summers said Tuesday the intermittent rejection means Christine may have to be put on the transplant list for a second heart.
The rejection has put added financial stress on the family, Summers said, because of increased medication and doctor's visits.
There are funds at both National City and Cortland banks to help pay medical expenses.
Faulty light caused fire
AUSTINTOWN -- Township firefighters have determined that a fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to Arby's Restaurant, 701 N. Canfield-Niles Road, last month was caused by a faulty neon light.
Reports state that an employee noticed sparks coming out of the light in the front of the store on the evening of March 9. The sparks lighted the fire, which spread to the roof.
The restaurant was evacuated, and there were no injuries.
Building-site thefts
CANFIELD -- Tools and equipment were reported stolen Monday from construction sites here.
Three steel doors worth a total of $1,350 were taken from a site on Gully Top Drive, and five rolls of wire and two 6-inch recess cans worth $132 were stolen from a site on Montreale Drive.
Mahoning County deputy sheriffs are investigating.
