Wallet, money bag lost
WASHINGTONVILLE -- Police here are searching for a missing wallet and money bag lost by a 65-year-old resident. Chief J.R. Blakeman said the man put a small laundry basket with a bank money bag, his wallet and several other items on the roof of his pickup truck and drove away. The man lost the items while traveling from Chris Street in the village to state Route 14 going into Salem, Blakeman said. Blakeman said the white bank bag contained "a significant amount of cash" and the man's wallet contained cash, identification and credit cards. Blakeman said anyone finding the money can voluntarily return it to the police department with "no questions asked."
Buying dump truck
EAST PALESTINE -- City council approved the lease-purchase of a 2002 International dump truck with a snow plow from International Truck & amp; Engine Corp, of West Chester, Ohio. The cost is $74,689, to be paid from the capital improvement and street department funds, City Manager Gary Clark said. The new truck replaces a 1978 model.
2 hearings scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- Hearings have been set April 15 for two Lisbon men arraigned Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court on drug charges.
Charles M. Lear, 43, of 404 N. Market St., was charged with aggravated drug trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Raymond E. Crosser, 30, of 221A N. Beaver St., was charged with drug abuse -- cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both men were apprehended around 9:45 p.m. Saturday after a traffic stop in the 500 block of St. Louis.
Black-box program
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- "Those Amazing Black Boxes," a program about the indestructible black boxes airlines use on planes, will be featured at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wilmington Lodge No. 804 of the Free and Accepted Masons, 220 W. Neshannock Ave. Craig "Buzz" Conroy, a former New Wilmington resident, will demonstrate how these instruments recreate what causes a plane crash. Conroy is an author and aviation export. The program is free and open to the public.
Economic seminar set
HOWLAND -- "Financial Responsibility in an Age of Easy Credit" is the topic of discussion for area high school students participating in the Economic Education Seminar sponsored by the Industrial Information Institute for Education.
Dr. Phillip Saunders, professor emeritus of economics at Indiana University, will present the seminar April 17 at the Avalon Inn.
Students and teachers from Columbiana, Mahoning, Mercer and Trumbull counties participate in the seminar. Business, industry and education representatives from Institute member companies also will attend the event and contribute to the discussion that follows Saunders' presentation.
The seminar is planned by the Institute's economic education committee. Dr. Teresa M. Riley, professor of economics, Youngstown State University, is committee chairwoman. Registration deadline is Thursday. Call the institute for additional information at (330) 742-2314.
Man injured in crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 27-year-old South Side man was in critical condition this morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center after a motorcycle crash on U.S. Route 62, says information from police and hospital personnel.
John Horkey, of Powers Way, crashed his motorcycle into a guardrail near the Himrod Avenue overpass about 6 p.m. Monday, police reports show. Witnesses told police he was traveling at a high rate of speed before losing control on a curve. He came to rest on the east side of the road while the motorcycle landed on the west side.
Endorsement for Ryan
WARREN -- United Steelworkers of America local 1375 has endorsed state Sen. Timothy Ryan, D-32nd, for the new 17th U.S. Congressional seat. Ryan, of Warren, is in his second year of office.
