MERCER COUNTY Sharon's summer school to take place in Farrell

Renovations going on at Sharon High School forced Sharon to find a temporary location for summer school classes.
FARRELL, Pa. -- A request from the Sharon City School District to conduct its summer school sessions at Farrell High School this year prompted a Farrell school director to take a shot at Sharon school officials.
"I'm pleased they're looking at us as an academic institution," said James Guerino as his board voted Monday to grant Sharon's request.
Guerino said he is happy Sharon is entrusting its students to an academic program in Farrell even though the Sharon students aren't allowed to come to Farrell to play sports and Farrell students aren't allowed to go to Sharon for sporting events.
February brawl: Guerino's comments were a reaction to Sharon school officials' canceling all boys football and basketball games between the two schools for the next school year after a brawl that ended a Sharon-Farrell boys varsity basketball game in the Sharon High School gym Feb. 2.
Police estimated between 70 and 100 people were involved in the fracas, and nine people have been charged so far with various counts ranging from assault on a police officer to disorderly conduct.
Eight of the nine are current or former Farrell students.
Farrell Superintendent Richard Rubano said Sharon made the request to conduct its summer school program at Farrell because Sharon High School is under renovation.
Between 10 and 12 classrooms will be needed, Rubano said, noting that students from several school districts, not just Sharon, are expected to attend.
In other business, the board adopted a school calendar for the 2002-03 school year in which classes begin Aug. 27 and end June 6.
