Dog attacks boy
WARREN -- Police officers shot and killed a dog that attacked a 9-year-old boy on Delaware Avenue S.W. The dog bit the boy on the shoulder. A police report does not state who owns the dog or the type of dog. The boy was not seriously injured. Reports state some people in the area started throwing things at the dog before it let go of the boy. Police officers also noted that a pit bull and a rottweiler were also seen running loose in the area and have been taken to the city dog pound.
Lane reduction
LIBERTY -- Interstate 80, between state Route 193 here and state Route 62 in Hubbard, will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Wednesday. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained all other times. The $6.6 million project is expected to last through August and calls for the resurfacing of I-80 and six bridges in the section.
Dangerous house
CHAMPION -- The Trumbull County Health Department quarantined a township home believed to be infested with three varieties of potentially dangerous mold.
The board of health will consider declaring the house, at 4509 Clover Lane, unfit for habitation at its next meeting April 17. The department quarantined the home on the basis of tests performed by a commercial agency at the request of the homeowners, Michael and Tracey Pullin, said Frank Migliozzi, the health department's director of environmental services. Water damage to floors and walls from two fires at the home could have contributed to the proliferation of mold, he said. The Pullin family has already moved from the house.
Endorsement for Ryan
WARREN -- United Steelworkers of America local 1375 has endorsed state Sen. Timothy Ryan, D-32nd, for the new 17th U.S. Congressional seat. Ryan, of Warren, is in his second year of office.
Grant for shelter
WARREN -- The Warren-Trumbull Urban League has been awarded $1,400 from the Ohio Department of Development for improvements to its homeless shelter. Statewide, grants totaling nearly $1 million were awarded to 27 homeless shelters through the program.
Appliance collection
WARREN -- Residents of Trumbull and Geauga counties will be able to dispose of refrigerators, air conditioners, hot water tanks and stoves at household appliance collections, to be held in both counties. No televisions or microwave ovens will be accepted, officials say. Appliances may be dropped off April 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Geauga County Engineer's Yard, 12665 Merritt Road, Chardon, or on April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Trumbull County Engineer's Yard, 650 North River Road, Warren.
Kids' safety day
WARREN -- Warren and Bazetta's police and fire departments are sponsoring a Children's Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The safety day will be at 760 Perkins-Jones Road. Activities include children photo and fingerprinting, fire safety training, bicycle safety tips and poison control information. The event is free and open to the public.
Economic seminar set
HOWLAND -- "Financial Responsibility in an Age of Easy Credit" is the topic of discussion for area high school students participating in the Economic Education Seminar sponsored by the Industrial Information Institute for Education.
Dr. Phillip Saunders, professor emeritus of economics at Indiana University, will present the seminar April 17 at the Avalon Inn.
Students and teachers from Columbiana, Mahoning, Mercer and Trumbull counties participate in the seminar. Business, industry and education representatives from Institute member companies also will attend the event and contribute to the discussion that follows Saunders' presentation.
The seminar is planned by the Institute's economic education committee. Dr. Teresa M. Riley, professor of economics, Youngstown State University, is committee chairwoman. Registration deadline is Thursday. Call the institute for additional information at (330) 742-2314.
