KENT -- Youngstown State's Jeanna Cunningham, a Warren Harding High graduate, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Kent State University Icebreaker Open.
Cunningham won the 100 in 12.5 seconds and the 200 in 25.75.
Delores Gaines placed sixth in the hammer throw with a school-record effort of 150 feet, 7 inches. The old mark was 147-4.
Emily Schnitkey took first place in the 1500 (4:44.71). Rachael Albert was fifth (5:00.13) and Lindsay Wojciak was sixth (5:01).
Lindsay Frontz finished second in the 800 (2:19) and Schnitkey was fourth (2:33).
Aaliyah Gillespie placed third in the 100 high hurdles (14.8) and Kelly Leonard was fifth (15.12). Kelly finished second in the 400 hurdles (1:09.3) and Gillespie was sixth (1:19.4).
Lissette Alamo placed second in the long jump (17-5 1/4). Laura Schatz finished fourth in the high jump (5-2 1/4). Beth Hochsetetler finished fifth in the discus (134-2) and Christian Campana recorded a personal-best to finish fifth in the javelin throw (108-9).
Eugene Harris placed second in the men's 100 (10.8) and Edwin Jackson was seventh (11.2).
Tim Tatarka finished fourth in the 800 (1:56.8). Jarrod Davis placed fourth in the discus (131-10) and sixth in the hammer throw (129-5).
Men's tennis
CLEVELAND -- Seth Banks posted a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 singles victory and teamed with Brandon Williams for an 8-6 doubles win, leading Youngstown State past Cleveland State 7-0 in a Horizon League match.
The Penguins also dropped a 4-3 decision to UIC.
Williams was also a double winner against the Vikings winning at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-0. Ryan Valentine was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles and he teamed with R.J. Pepino for an 8-0 victory in doubles. Pepino won 6-1, 6-4 in singles.
Kevin Schaffert and Kyle Kestner won their singles matches 6-4, 6-1, and 5-7, 6-3, 10-6, respectively, and they teamed for a 8-2 doubles victory.
In the loss to UIC, Pepino was a 7-6, 6-4 winner at No. 3 singles and Schaffert won at No. 5 singles 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.
Women's tennis
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Youngstown State lost its first Horizon League match of the spring, 7-0 to Butler.
The Penguins' (7-7) best chances for a win came at No. 4 and 5 singles, where Sarah Rothenberg won 6-1, then lost 6-1, 6-4 and Jenn Meisier won 7-5, then lost 6-3, 6-3.
Football
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two former Youngstown State players, Ray Isaac and Bryan Hawthorne, will continue their careers in the Arena Football League.
Isaac, a quarterback for YSU from 1998-91, and Hawhorne, a defensive lineman-fullback, will play their first Arena 2 games this weekend for the Charleston Swamp Foxes in North Charleston, S.C. and the Pensacola, Fla., Barracudas, respectively.

Ferris brothersadvance
LANSING, Mich. -- Ronnie and David Ferris advanced to the U.S.A. Men's National Gymnastics Championships after competing in the Region 5 Junior Elite Championships on Saturday.
Ron Ferris, a senior at Fitch High, was first all-around with a score of 54.00. He was first in vaulting, parallel bars and horizontal bar, second in rings and fourth on pommel horse. He competed in the Junior Elite I division (16-19 years).
The national championships are in San Diego May 1-5.
David, competing in the Junior Elite II (14-15-year-olds), finished in the top 10 all-around with a score of 43.05. David was sixth in floor exercise and 10th in rings.

Aeros win 4-0
AKRON -- Starter Ted Rose and two Akron Aeros relievers held the Erie SeaWolves to four hits in a 4-0 victory Sunday in the Eastern League.
Nate Grindell homered as the Aeros (3-1) scored a run in the seventh inning and three in the eighth.

Denmark handsU.S. men first loss
BISMARCK, N.D. -- Denmark's Ulrik Schmidt moved his rink into a tie for first place with undefeated Scotland after a come-from-behind 12-7 victory over the United States on Sunday in the World Curling Championships.
The loss by the Americans was their first of the event, leaving them tied for third with Canada and Switzerland at 2-1. Four teams make the playoff round at the end of round-robin play Thursday.
On the women's side, Norway's Dordi Nordby handed defending world champion Colleen Jones of Canada her first loss, 9-4.
Canada's loss left Scotland's Jackie Lockhart alone in first place at 3-0, followed by Canada, Norway, Denmark's Lene Bidstrup, Switzerland's Manuela Kormann and Russia's Olga Jarkova at 2-1.
In other women's games, the United States won its first game, pounding Sweden 11-2. Scotland defeated Denmark 8-2, Switzerland beat Korea Kim 12-5 and Russia surprised Germany 9-5.
On the men's side, Canada's Randy Ferbey rebounded from its first loss Saturday night to beat Japan 9-2, while Scotland defeated winless Austria 8-3. Norway beat Sweden 7-5 and Switzerland beat Finland 9-5.
