EAST PALESTINE -- The city schools' continuous improvement committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the high school. Joann Knight, director of curriculum and instruction, said the high school, middle school and elementary principals met recently with teachers and staff members to develop additions and revisions to the district's continuous improvement plan. The district conducts yearly reviews to evaluate its overall progress toward improving pupil performance, she said. Parents or others interested in the district's continuous improvement plan are welcome to attend the meeting, Knight said.
St. Francis offerscourse for diabetics
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- In an effort to help people who have diabetes better manage their symptoms, St. Francis Hospital of New Castle offers a self-management course and support group. A certified diabetes educator and dietitian will teach the course from 6 to 9 p.m. May 2, 7, 9 and 14 at the St. Francis Conference Center, 1100 South Mercer Street in New Castle. A physician's referral is necessary, and the program is covered by most insurance plans. Class size is limited. There is a fee that may be covered by insurance. To register, call (724) 654-5433 before April 30. In addition, the diabetes support group will meet at 2 p.m. May 1 at the St. Francis Conference Center.
Charged after chase
HUBBARD -- A 60-year-old Hubbard Township man faces charges after a lengthy weekend chase. Thomas King of Chestnut-Ridge Road was scheduled to appear today in Girard Municipal Court on charges of speeding, fleeing and eluding and aggravated assault. Hubbard Township police Detective Mike Begeot said police attempted to stop the vehicle King was driving at Chestnut-Ridge and Wick-Campbell roads about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Begeot said the chase took police into city of Hubbard and Liberty Township in Trumbull County; Youngstown and Austintown Township in Mahoning County; and came to an end in Calcutta in Columbiana County where police flattened his tires with strips across the road. King was being held in the Trumbull County Jail.
Bakery robbery
SHARON, Pa. -- Sharon police are looking for two men who robbed the Metz Bakery on Division Street. Police said they were spotted leaving the bakery at about 7:45 a.m. Saturday in a four-door burgundy Oldsmobile. Police later learned the car had been reported stolen in Youngstown at about 7:30 that morning. Police said one man came into the store with a handgun and took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register and the other man, who also had a handgun, stood outside. Police said witnesses described them as black men, wearing dark clothes. One was about 6 feet tall and the other man was shorter. Anyone with information about their whereabouts should call Sharon police.
