YEARS OF SERVICE League activities

Among the current projects of the Junior Civic League are:
The Cinderella Ball. The major fund-raiser of the organization for 45 years, the event presents debutantes in cotillion form.
Scholarship and education program. Initiated in 1961, it benefits from the proceeds of the Cinderella Ball. The scholarship program has resulted in more than 200 scholarships totaling some $350,000 being awarded to outstanding minority students. The Adopt-A-School Program provides materials to enhance curriculum at local schools.
Annual installation and scholarship brunch, a highlight of which is the introduction of the scholarship recipients and their parents.
Political forums. The league presents and interviews candidates running for local offices as well as school boards.
Annual children's Christmas parties. The events, held at local community centers, benefit needy children.
Past projects include:
Spring style shows to raise funds for the Crippled Children's Society, now known as Easter Seals, and the league's scholarship program.
Educational and cultural forums. The events were held at Powers Auditorium and featured prominent speakers for the benefit of the community.
Operation Up-Beat, a musical-instrument program that secured funding for inner-city school marching bands. Over 100 instruments were purchased and loaned to minority students, who then received free instruction. A result was the formation of the Operation Up-Beat Band, which marched in parades and performed at public affairs. At the end of the program, the instruments were donated to the Youngstown Public School's music department.
