AUSTINTOWN -- A Youngstown man was in stable condition Saturday in St. Elizabeth Health Center with injuries suffered when a chase with state patrol troopers ended in a crash here. The patrol has charged the man, 31, with reckless operation.
Troopers said the man was fleeing police around 10 p.m. in the northbound lane of North Raccoon Road, north of Mahoning Avenue, when he tried to pass a car on the left. That car then turned left.
The man's vehicle hit the car, hit a tree and flipped over. The other driver was not injured. Information about why the troopers were chasing the man was not immediately available.
Teen dies after accident
HANOVERTON -- A Pittsburgh teen has died from injuries she suffered Monday in a two-car crash in Hanover Township. Lila Schantz, 17, was pronounced dead Saturday in Akron City Hospital. Schantz and Anna Finley, 17, also of Pittsburgh, were passengers in a car driven by Rachel Isaacson, 17, also of Pittsburgh. Isaacson and Finley were treated at UPMC Pittsburgh.
The state patrol said Isaacson was westbound on U.S. 30 in Hanover Township on Monday morning when she lost control of her car on the crest of a hill. The car spun left of center and was struck by an eastbound pickup truck driven by Michelle R. Martin, 34, of Lisbon, the patrol said. Isaacson's car then went off the left side of the road over an embankment and into a field.
Marijuana plants found
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police said they found marijuana plants growing in a hydroponic garden Saturday morning in a room at a Manhattan Avenue home. Reports do not say how much marijuana was growing in the room.
The woman who owns the house said she rents out the room and wouldn't identify who rents the room for fear of retaliation. Her ex-husband called police after smelling marijuana in the home and spotting the plants through a crack in a door.
'Traffic blitz' results
AUSTINTOWN -- Mahoning County deputy sheriffs made 72 traffic stops between 8 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday as part of a "traffic blitz" on Mahoning Avenue. During a blitz, deputies target an area and watch for violations.
On Friday night and Saturday morning, deputies issued 14 verbal warnings and 23 citations, mostly for seat-belt violations.
The sheriff's department also made an arrest for underage consumption and cited three people for driving under the influence and four people for driving under suspension.
Funding for the blitz came from a $105,000 federal grant to combat driving under the influence and other traffic violations.
Man stabs himself
SALEM -- A state Route 62 man was in serious condition Saturday in Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center after stabbing himself 10 times with a butcher knife, Goshen Township police said.
The man, 32, stabbed himself about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, when police tried to arrest him at his home on suspicion of assault. The man was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland by a LifeFlight helicopter. Police did not have details about the assault.
Boy hit by car
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- A 9-year-old boy was in stable condition Saturday night in St. Elizabeth Health Center after being hit by a car here. St. Elizabeth officials did not release the boy's name and had no information about the accident.
New Middletown police could not be reached for comment.
Warren teen shot
WARREN -- A Warren teen was in stable condition Saturday in Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital with wounds from a shotgun blast.
O'Brien Goliday, 18, was taken to the hospital after getting shot around 2:30 a.m. in the 1900 block of Burton Street Southeast.
Warren police said they had no suspects and released few details. The case was turned over to the detective division.
