CANFIELD Canine Fun Run offers fun for pets

Involvement with their animals makes pet owners more responsible, the shelter director said.
CANFIELD -- Dogs will have the chance to be pampered at the fifth annual Canine Fun Run and Walk on April 27 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Organized by Angels for Animals and the Mahoning County Humane Society, the event will have canine massage among its activities.
"Canine massage is good for older animals that may have arthritis and those with spinal problems," said Charlene Burke from the humane society.
Run: In addition to massage, a 1-mile run will be held for dogs and their owners. The run and activities will be held at Canfield Fairgrounds in the Hay and Grain building, 9 a.m. to noon.
Owners can also walk the mile with their dogs but need to collect pledges.
More than 500 dogs and owners are expected to participate in the event, Burke said.
"The event is held to raise money and to get people more involved with their pets," Burke said. She estimates the event will raise $5,000.
Bonding: Polly Wardle, shelter director for Angels for Animals, said it is important for owners to become involved with their animals "because it creates a more responsible pet owner," which leads to reduced pet abuse and overpopulation.
Owners and pets can participate in a costume contest, canine olympics and ballroom-style dancing, which all are free to the public.
The event is sponsored by WFMJ.
Those interested in the canine fun run and walk can register by calling Angels for Animals at (330) 549-1111 or the Mahoning County Humane Society at (330) 782-4071. Registration forms are available at any PetsMart or Pet Supplies location. Registration is $12 in advance and $15 the day of the event.
Proceeds will benefit Angels for Animals and the humane society. The money will be used to support abuse and neglect investigations, programs for spaying and neutering, and shelter efforts.
