BOARDMAN --The Boardman High softball team's winning streak of 24 games came to end Saturday as the Spartans (4-1) split the first of their Saturday doubleheaders at Fields of Dreams.
After defeating Elyria 3-2, in eight innings, the defending Division I state champion Spartans lost to Uniontown Lake, 1-0.
Boardman won the opener in the bottom eighth when Mary McCabe scored on Jaclyn Corroto's grounder to shortstop.
McCabe had led off with a walk and stole second. Laura Amero followed with a fielder's choice which advanced McCabe to third.
Audrey Martinko had the game's only extra-base hit, a triple in the fifth. Martinko scored to give Boardman a 2-0 lead.
Winning pitcher Gina Rango had Boardman's only other hit, a single in the second. Elyria went to 0-1.
In the second game, Uniontown Lake scored in the top of the fifth.
On Blue Streaks baserunner Lauren Enlow's attempt to steal second, the Spartans failed to stop the catcher's throw, allowing Enlow to score.
Rango produced the Spartans' only hit, a single to lead off the second inning.
Jessica Lindamood had two singles for Lake (2-0).
Ursuline 14, Pymatuning Valley 2: YOUNGSTOWN -- Ali Vitello, Jenna Vrabel and Megan Colon each had two hits for the Irish (2-1) who enjoyed a 12-hit attack.
Ursuline took an early 3-0 lead and a five-run fourth inning made it 8-2. The Lakers (5-2) were held to five hits by Maureen Cearfoss (2-1).
Champion 5, Niles 4: CHAMPION -- Three batters and three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning brought Champion from a 4-3 deficit as the Golden Flashes won their second game.
Junior Stephanie Weaver and senior Jessica Rowland led off the seventh with singles before sophomore Jessica Carpenter doubled to drove both home with the winning runs to end game.
Rowland finished with two hits for Champion (2-0) as did Tia Symcheck and Crystal Martin for Niles.
South Range 12-9, Struthers 0-4: NORTH LIMA -- South Range's softball team improved to 3-1 with a doubleheader win.
In the opener, senior Jenn Toth struck out eight in a three-hitter. Toth also had four singles for two RBIs while Jessie Clayton and Jen Ridgeway added three hits apiece. One of Clayton's hits was a double.
Heather Hrina, Holly Hickenbottom and Allison Ginnetti had hits for Struthers.
In the second game, a four-run first inning got South Range off on the right foot. Clayton tripled and Amy Algeo doubled while Kelly James had two hits and two RBIs.
Hickenbottom's two-run single in the third inning paced Struthers (1-3).
Mineral Ridge 9-8, Crestview 4-4: COLUMBIANA -- Mineral Ridge took advantage of early opportunities in both games to post a doubleheader sweep.
The Rams built 4-0 leads through three innings in each game to improve their record to 3-0.
In the first game, Katie Olive had two doubles and Katie Garland two singles, while Ashley Ault and Kristi Padovani each drove in two runs.
Ault earned the pitching victory, striking out nine and walking one.
In the second game, Olive had three hits while Robin Zimmerman and Lisa Lodwick each had two, with Lodwick driving in two runs.
Kaili Gehring earned the victory. She struck out 11 and walked four.
Springfield 3-7, East Palestine 0-5: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Maggie Marsh (3-1) struck out 13 to win the opener and came on in relief in the first inning of the nightcap to gain that decision.
Danielle Dewitt had three hits for the Tigers (3-1) in the first game and Jessica Snyder had two hits, one a bases-loaded double, in the nightcap.
Also in the second game, Marsh had a single and a triple while Lindsay Johnson had a single and a double.
Caravel (Del.) 14, Southington 1: ORLANDO, Fla. -- Southington committed 11 errors, allowing Caravel (Del.) to cruise past the Wildcats at Disney's Wide World of Sports Field.
Lindsay Byer had a double for Southington.
