YOUNGSTOWN -- A 23-year-old West Side man was killed when the car he was driving crossed the median on Interstate 680 near state Route 711 and was struck by a tractor-trailer. City police were not releasing the identity of the Hartzell Avenue man pending notification of his family. Detective Sgt. Dave Lomax said it is unclear why the man lost control of the 1991 Pontiac Grand Am at about 11:05 p.m. Thursday. David Vogel, 27, of Pittsburgh, was driving the truck that hit the car. Vogel was uninjured.
Teen shot in leg
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old boy taking out the trash was struck by gunfire outside his North Side home. The teen, an 11th-grader at Choffin Career Center, was struck in the left leg at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday. He told police that he and a friend were taking garbage cans to the curb when they heard four or five shots and he felt pain in his leg. The friend ran inside to get the teen's mother. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he was in stable condition, police said.
Sheriff's safety blitz
AUSTINTOWN -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will conduct a DUI, speed and safety blitz in the township along Mahoning Avenue, sheriff's officials said. Several cruisers will be stationed in the area from 8 tonight to 4 a.m. Saturday to enforce drunken-driving, speed and seat-belt laws.
Jury indicts teen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a Campbell teen accused of obstructing justice in the investigation of the stabbing of a Canfield High School student. The indictment against Eithyer Ramos, 18, of Coitsville Road, Campbell, was handed up Thursday. County deputy sheriffs believe Ramos was with Joel Lassalle, 18, of East Philadelphia Avenue, Youngstown, when Jose Morales, 17, of North Palmyra Road, was stabbed in February. Lassalle is set to go to trial Wednesday on felonious assault charges in the stabbing. Morales told deputies he was stabbed in the chest during a fight at his home around 1:24 a.m. Feb. 24. Deputies gave no reason for the fight.
Club, worker cited
YOUNGSTOWN -- A city bar employee has been cited for selling to a minor, and a local fraternal club was cited for gambling by the Ohio Investigative Unit of the Department of Public Safety. A 21-year-old bartender at the Varsity Club Bar & amp; Grill, 2702 Market St., was cited March 29 for selling beer to a minor, unit personnel said, and an 18-year-old Struthers teen was cited for consuming beer there. On March 30, the club was cited for selling beer to a minor. The citations were issued after an investigation by Youngstown police and unit investigators. The American Legion Post 472 at 323 E. Indianola Ave. was issued five gambling citations on March 29 for violations that included use of drawings, raffles, tip boards and tip tickets, public safety personnel said.
Woman beaten, robbed
COITSVILLE -- Police continue looking for leads to solve the robbery of a 30-year-old woman, who was fired upon, pulled from her car, pistol-whipped and dragged, then dragged upstairs in her residence. The woman, bleeding profusely and treated for head and facial injuries at St. Elizabeth Health Center, told police she was confronted Wednesday evening by two masked, gloved, pistol-toting gunmen, who demanded drugs and money, when she arrived at her Oak Street Extension residence around 8:45 p.m. After she was forced to turn off her security alarm, beaten and robbed of jewelry, one of the robbers ordered her to stay in a closet until morning or be killed. Police found numerous bullet holes in her car and shell casings all over the driveway and yard. The victim said she saw a car pass her house without stopping while she was being beaten in the front yard and screaming for help.
Lottery tickets stolen
COITSVILLE -- A manager of the Tic Toc Food Mart on McCartney Road reported to township police that someone had stolen $200 in instant lottery tickets. He said he discovered the 200 "Doubling Doubler" tickets missing during an inventory check Thursday, police reports show. The tickets were locked in a back office and the manager said it is likely the thief is a store employee. Because the tickets were in inventory, they are not activated in a lottery computer and cannot be redeemed.
Considering rezoning
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township Trustees will have a hearing at 7 p.m. Monday to consider a request to rezone three parcels of land behind Regal Motors from residential to commercial. Regal Motors is at 359 E. Western Reserve Road and the three parcels are on Warren Avenue. The hearing will be in the township administration office in the South Range Plaza.
