SOFTBALL Southington wins in Florida



Poland won in South Carolina while Boardman won twice at home.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Lindsay Byer tossed a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts as the Southington High softball team defeated Pearl River (Miss.) Central 8-1 Thursday at the Disney complex.
Byer allowed only a third-inning run and two walks, evening her record at 1-1.
Byer and Katie Fiest each had two hits for Southington (1-2), while Brittanie Gillium added a hit, two runs and an RBI.
Poland 9, Germantown Valley View 1: SUMMERSVILLE, S.C. -- Poland finished its spring trip by winning four of five games.
Kristy Gaudiose tripled and doubled to drive in two runs and she scored twice in the Bulldogs' defeat of Valley View.
Steffi Graf added two hits while Stephanie Russell tripled and Jessica Lamport doubled.
Pitcher Sarah Knill tossed a two-hitter, striking out 13 and walking none.
The Bulldogs allowed just one earned run in five games in the South Carolina tournament.
Boardman: BOARDMAN -- The Spartans remain unbeaten (3-0) after turning back Ashtabula Edgewood 7-1 and Wadsworth 5-1.
Boardman used two pitchers in the first game, with Ashley DiDomenico working five innings to pick up the win.
Mary McCabe hit two singles and drove in a run while Jaclyn Corroto added two singles.
Jennifer Pancake (2-0) pitched a complete game against Wadsworth. McCabe's two hits included a double. She scored once and stole a base for the Spartans.
Laura Amero, Gina Rango and Corroto each had two singles.
Brookfield 8, Girard 2: GIRARD -- The Warriors took advantage of 13 hits, including four doubles.
Jen Ford, Samantha Puhak and Sarah Jugheinmer had two hits each for Brookfield (1-0). Pitcher Julie Raykie allowed the two runs on six hits for the victory.
Girard (0-3) committed five errors.
