Cancer fund-raiser
BOARDMAN -- City of Hope's Boardman Workout for Hope to fund breast cancer research is today at Lady of America Fitness Center, 1315 Boardman-Canfield Road.
Registration is every 45 minutes beginning at 9 a.m. The cost is $25. There will be a variety of fitness activities for all ages and fitness levels and special presentations on diet and cancer prevention. Participants will receive a Workout for Hope T-shirt. At City of Hope, in Duarte, Calif., near Los Angeles, 88 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to research, encompassing essential investigation, breast cancer screening, and treatment.
Lowellville cruiser
LOWELLVILLE -- Hot off the delivery truck and onto the street, Lowellville's newest cruiser is as sleek as it is functional.
Described by William Vance, chief of police, as fully equipped, the 2002 Ford Crown Victoria was delivered Friday afternoon. It replaces a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria the department traded in.
With the trade, Vance said, the new car cost about $17,000.
The department's other cruiser, a 1999 Crown Victoria, has a new look too. Vance, also an auto-body repairman, spruced up the car with new paint and lettering.
"I got tired of all black," he explained.
Lowellville buys a new cruiser every four or five years, the chief said.
Traffic enforcement
GIRARD -- The police department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program for March resulted in 113 citations' being issued.
They included traffic violations, 59; speeding, 37; seat-belt violations, 13; and driving with suspended license, four. Police say the monthly number of accidents has decreased by 21.5 percent and drunken-driving arrests by 75 percent because of the program.
Park history at library

Trial set for family
YOUNGSTOWN -- A trial will be April 22 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a couple who operated McDonough's Lounge and their daughter on charges related to drug trafficking.
Thomas McDonough, 66, his wife, Catherine, 67, and daughter Mary Catherine McDonough, 47, were found in contempt of court Wednesday by Judge Robert Lisotto because they failed to hire an attorney to represent them. Their trial was supposed to start that day.
The family was back in court Friday with attorneys Anthony Meranto and Michael Rich, who will represent them in their trial.
Commission faces suit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners are being sued in common pleas court by a Niles contracting company that says it is owed $150,000 for demolition of the parking deck at the former Higbee building. L.T. Boccia Construction Co. filed the suit Friday, saying the county has refused to pay for work done in 1996.
County Administrator Gary Kubic had not seen the lawsuit but denied that the county owes Boccia anything. He said the company has been paid in full. The suit will be referred to the county prosecutor's office. The former parking deck site on West Federal Street is now the location of the George V. Voinovich Government Center.
Three facing trial
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Charges against three people arrested in a drug sweep in Lawrence County were bound to court for trial by District Justice Melissa Amodie on Friday.
Tabitha Johnson, 35, of Ridge Street, faces charges of criminal use of a communication facility and criminal conspiracy. Robert J. Sullivan, 43, of Smithfield Street is charged with criminal facilitation of a communication device, and Ernest Rozier, 47, of West Reynolds Street is charged with criminal facilitation of a communication device and criminal conspiracy to deliver cocaine.
Nine others arrested Monday had their preliminary hearings postponed until Friday and April 19. Investigators contend all were part of a drug ring run by James Johnson, 33, of Ridge Street, who is accused of bringing more than $500,000 worth of cocaine to the city from February 2000 to December 2001.
Animal baby shower
CANFIELD -- Mill Creek MetroParks farm animal baby shower is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the MetroParks Farm on state Route 46 across from the Canfield Fairgrounds. Participants will see chicks hatching and visit with and pet ducklings, piglets, calves, kids and lambs.
