GIRARD -- Robotics teams of Girard and Warren G. Harding high schools will compete Friday and Saturday at the Hershey Center in Toronto, Canada.
The activities of both teams can be followed on Girard team's Web site at http://ghs.girard.k12.oh.us/robotics.
The site is maintained by Girard team members under the direction of senior Matt Stevens.
Drop off scrap tires
LIBERTY -- Township residents can get rid of their scrap tires during April because of a Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District grant.
Up to eight car and light-truck tires can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to noon April 20 and 27 at the township road department, 1099 Gypsy Lane, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22, through April 26.
Curbside collection will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22-23. Residents must call the road department, (330) 746-7044, to request curbside pickup.
Book sale in Niles
NILES -- The McKinley Memorial Library will conduct a book sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 13 and from 1 to 5 p.m. April 14. Items will be displayed in the library's auditorium.
Girard power outage
GIRARD -- Ohio Edison Co. says faulty equipment may be responsible for a power outage that affected 4,400 customers in the Girard area Tuesday night.
A utility spokesman said the failures at three substations severed power for about 10 minutes.
Service was restored to all by midnight.
Free shots for kids
GIRARD -- A free child immunization clinic will be at 1:30 p.m. April 11 at the city health department in city hall.
Parents must bring a copy of the child's immunization records. A parent or guardian must accompany children under age 18.
Register by calling (330) 545-6048 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Tire disposal
GIRARD -- Girard residents can dispose of passenger vehicle tires any weekday.
Jim Dobson, city deputy heath commissioner and director of environmental health, explained that residents with four or less passenger tires can obtain from the health department a disposal permission coupon at the health department in city hall from 8 to 11:30 a.m. weekdays.
A photo ID and utility bill are needed to get the coupon.
Tires are to be taken to the street department garage, 943 S. State St. Those with more than four tires or with questions, call (330) 545-6048.
Recreation panel
GIRARD -- City council's recreation committee meets at 6 p.m. Thursday in council chambers. Councilman Charles Doran, D-4th, committee chairman, wants to discuss funding for activities with a reduced budget.
Mother pleads innocent
YOUNGSTOWN -- Janell Thomas, 18, of North Garland Avenue pleaded innocent Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to involuntary manslaughter.
She is charged with the death of her 11-month-old son, Leroy Huff Jr., in October.
Thomas is being held in the county jail in lieu of $1 million bond awaiting trial May 8.
Two are indicted
CLEVELAND -- In cases with Mahoning County connections, a federal grand jury has indicted an Austintown man on a charge of being a felon in possession of explosives and a Springfield, Mass., man on a charge of illegal re-entry into this country after deportation.
Kenneth W. Collins III, 37, of North Meridian Road, Austintown, was charged with having 125 explosive devices after his conviction for aggravated trafficking in drugs and possession of criminal tools, the U.S. attorney's office said.
The case was investigated by Austintown Police and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Domingo Perez-Perez, 38, was found in the United States Nov. 19 after being deported in 1998 after a 1992 conviction for narcotics possession, the indictment says.
That case was investigated by the Mahoning County Drug Task Force and the INS.
Teen scammed via eBay
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old West Side teen was scammed of $1,300 by someone who agreed to sell him a laptop computer over the Internet.
Police reports say the teen ordered the computer March 20 from an eBay user. The computer was to arrive within three days.
The teen told police Tuesday he has received no response from the seller since he wired the money to a London, England, address.
