HOWLAND Neighborhood to get grant

The grant will be matched with township money.
HOWLAND -- The Bolindale neighborhood in Howland, considered by planners to be one of Trumbull County's most blighted areas, will receive a $300,000 grant for improvements.
The money was awarded from an Ohio Department of Development grant program introduced this year.
Girard also successfully applied for a grant through the program, with the result that 20 percent of the $3 million available statewide was awarded to Trumbull County. No information was available on the amount of Girard's grant and how it intends to use it.
"It is sort of a big deal for Trumbull County to get 20 percent of the funding," said Julie Green, the planner at the county planning commission who prepared the Bolindale grant. "We need it, and every little bit helps."
Putting funds to use: The money will be used to install a waterline along Bolin Avenue, replace open ditches with storm sewers along 10 streets, widen and resurface five others, and install streetlights over the entire Bolindale area.
Bolindale is on both sides of state Route 169 between Deforest Avenue and the Warren city limits.
Other funding for the project includes $137,000 from Howland Township and $140,000 in state Issue 2 funds.
County commissioners have pledged $25,000 for Bolindale from the roughly $500,000 available in the Community Development Block Grant available this year.
