Canfield graduatepaces Cincinnati
CINCINNATI -- Brad Schutz, a 1999 graduate of Canfield High, has taken over as the offensive leader of the University of Cincinnati baseball team this year. He leads the Bearcats in five offensive categories and shares the lead in two others.
Schutz is hitting .376 this season, with five doubles, five home runs and 21 runs scored.
In a three-game series against then-No. 18 East Carolina, Schutz hit .643 (9-for-14) with two home runs and four RBIs as UC went 1-1-1 in those games.
Schutz, starting at shortstop, also leads Conference USA in assists with 89 and is sixth in double plays turned. He has committed only five errors in 134 chances.
The Bearcats entered last weekend's conference series with Memphis with an 11-12-1 record.
Mercer starsbeat Mahoning
SHARON, Pa. -- James Charlton scored 17 points while Nolan Reimold and Dan McElhaney each hit for 13 points as Mercer County defeated Mahoning County 106-77 in the championship game of the Sharon Lions Hoyle boy's basketball game.
Shawn Simpson scored 20 points, John Brown hit for 17 points and Marc Palermo had 13 points, seven assists and five steals for Mahoning Co.
Kate Schell shot 8-for-8 from the foul line and collected 19 points as Erie Elite beat Mercer Co. 57-53 in the girls title game.
Chere Marshall had 11 points for Mercer Co.

McNamara choiceas player of year
Bishop Hannan High senior Gerry McNamara was named the Associated Press Pennsylvania Small School (Class AA and A) basketball player of the year for a second consecutive season.
McNamara, who is headed to Syracuse, was a runaway winner in statewide voting of sports writers and broadcasters. Only six players received votes and no player except McNamara received more than two votes.
A 6-foot-3 guard, McNamara's highlight performance of the season was scoring 55 points -- 41 in the first half -- against Camp Hill Trinity in a PIAA Class AA semifinal.
McNamara followed that performance by scoring 32 points and grabbing six rebounds as Bishop Hannan defeated Sto-Rox 70-68 in the Class AA final in Hershey.
McNamara finished the season with averages of 23.6 points, 7.2 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 steals a game. His 2,917 points are the most in PIAA District 2 history and put him seventh on the state's all-time scoring list.
Buckeyes beatNorthwestern
COLUMBUS -- Joe Wilkins hit a three-run home run and Nate Smith allowed just one hit as Ohio State beat Northwestern 9-2 Sunday.
Wilkins' home run was part of a four-run fifth inning that put the Buckeyes up 8-0.
Smith's bid at a no-hitter was broken up by Jon Mikrut's home run in the sixth inning. Smith had eight strikeouts and three walks for Ohio State (15-5-1, 3-1 in the Big Ten).

Hookom winssnowboard title
TRUCKEE, Calif. -- Stacia Hookom won the women's parallel giant slalom, edging four Olympians for her second title in the U.S. Snowboard Championships.
Hookom, of Edwards, Colo., won the slalom on Friday.
Canada's Jasey Jay Anderson won the men's event at Northstar-at-Tahoe Ski Area, while Ian Price of Manchester Center, Vt., finished second to take the U.S. title.
Kenyans sweep10-K run
NEW ORLEANS -- Sammy Kipketer broke his own world record for 10 kilometers, leading a 1-2-3 Kenyan sweep in winning the Crescent City Classic.
Kipketer quickly pulled away and finished in 27 minutes, 10 seconds. He beat the record he set a year ago in the Netherlands by eight seconds.
Quin Snyderto stay at Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Missouri basketball coach Quin Snyder, sought by Washington for its vacancy, said Sunday night that he plans to remain with Tigers.
"We have some very special players on our team and we have made a tremendous investment in each other over the last few years," Snyder said in statement released by the school.
The school said Snyder would not comment further until Wednesday.
Snyder, who has guided the Tigers to the NCAA tournament in each of his first three seasons and to the round of eight this year, was considered a prime candidate for the Washington job because of his strong ties to Seattle. He's a native of the Seattle suburb of Mercer Island and still has family in the area.
Washington is looking for a coach to replace Bob Bender, asked to resign last week after three consecutive losing seasons.
Washington athletic director Barbara Hedges has not commented publicly on her search for a coach but received permission to talk with Snyder, Gonzaga coach Mark Few and Saint Louis' Lorenzo Romar, who played for the Huskies.

SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Michael Schumacher won the Brazilian Grand Prix in his new Ferrari, edging younger brother Ralf by less than a second.
Schumacher, the four-time world champion, was in front from the start in the debut of his F2002 car and ceded the lead just twice.
