INDIANAPOLIS -- American Legion National Cmdr. Richard J. Santos has called on American business and industry to help ease the financial burden on National Guard and Reserve troops activated in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by offering salary continuation, paying the difference between civilian and military pay. Also, Santos said the American Legion has reactivated its Family Support Network to assist families of troops called to active duty.
VETERANS
Holocaust record
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio VFW has started a program to record and preserve eyewitness testimony of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of American soldiers who liberated Holocaust survivors. Participating veterans should include the name and location of the concentration camps, dates covered by their report, approximate size of inmate population and prisoner's physical condition, whether guards were present, condition of the camp, nationality of prisoners, reaction of local people, care given to liberated inmates and statements by inmates. Veterans should submit their written (typed if possible) recollections to their local VFW post. The information will be made available to state and military historical archives, and original manuscripts will be offered to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.
Shooting sports
NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Step Outside and the Paralyzed Veterans of America have launched a new Shooting Sports Program for veterans and also to serve as a national program to support implementation of the Disabled Sportsmen's Access Act. Step Outside events will focus on recruiting disabled shooters and recreational therapists, who will introduce a broad spectrum of activities from air rifles to muzzleloader shooting to individuals with disabilities.
Semipostal stamp
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. of Poland, D-17th, had introduced legislation to allow Postal Service patrons to contribute to funding programs and services offered by the Military Order of the Purple Heart through the issuance of a semipostal stamp. A semipostal issuance would provide for a stamp carrying the first-class rate plus an additional cost of no more than 25 percent with proceeds going to the designated organization.

Air Force major
Air Force Major Thomas J. Richards was promoted to his current rank while serving as assistant operations officer for the 310th Airlift Squadron, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. He is a son of Michael D. and MaryAnn Richards, Florida Avenue, Youngstown. He graduated in 1985 from Woodrow Wilson High School, Youngstown, and received a bachelor's degree in 1989 from the University of Florida, Gainesville.

YOUNG MARINES
Training session
VIENNA -- The Young Marines, an organization for youths between ages 8 and 18 in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys, is accepting applications for its fall/winter recruit training session. Training will begin in November. The group meets one weekend a month in Leavittsburg.
