YOUNGSTOWN -- Proceeds from this year's Peace Race set for Oct. 7 will benefit victims of the terrorist attacks in New York.
Proceeds also will benefit Tod Children's Hospital.
The 27th annual race will include two races, a 10K run and a two-mile walk. The 10K run will begin at 10:15 a.m. and follow a course through Mill Creek Park, finishing in front of the YMCA in downtown Youngstown. More than $5,000 will be awarded in the open and master's divisions.
The two-mile walk will start and finish in front of the YMCA.
Proceeds benefiting the attack victims will be distributed through the Clear Channel Global Relief Fund. The Peace Race Foundation and Clear Channel Radio Youngstown recently joined forces in this effort.
The Peace Race and Peace Walk are open to men, women, children, families, small businesses and corporations. Advance registration is $13 and includes a long-sleeved T-shirt. Participants may register at Second Sole in Boardman. Registration on race day is $17; participants must register before 9:15 a.m. at the YMCA.

Plans for Nov. 11 Mass
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Gathering of the Irish Clans planning committee meetings for a Mass on Nov. 11, Veterans Day, at St. Columba Cathedral are at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Catholic Diocese office, 225 Elm St., and at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the AOH Building, 5110 Southern Blvd., Boardman. The event will commemorate people who served in the Armed Forces and the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. People interested in serving on the committee should call Detective Sgt. More scrutiny of trucks
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol has launched a statewide effort to improve scrutiny of commercial truck drivers transporting hazardous materials.
Troopers will be checking drivers, their credentials, licenses, endorsements, shipping paperwork and destinations at scales and random inspection sites.
The patrol estimates that fewer than 10 percent of commercial trucks traveling through Ohio contain hazardous materials.
Pupils raise $136
YOUNGSTOWN -- Pupils at Youngstown Christian School have raised $136 for American Red Cross disaster relief in New York City.
The fund-raiser took the form of a "Dress Down Day" on Friday, during which pupils in grades seven through 12 could, within certain limits, ignore the standard school dress code for a donation of at least $1 to the cause.
