Westminster: Two area runners helped the women's cross country team win the Thiel Cross Country Invitational. Junior Kelly Schmidt (West Middlesex High) had the fourth-fastest time in 23 minutes, 13 seconds to place sixth. Freshman Felicie Reed (South Range) followed in 23:51 to place ninth. The Titans posted 18 points in the four-school field.In men's cross country, Westminster placed seventh among 11 schools in the Allegheny College Classic. Scott Fabry (Lowellville) had the fifth-fastest time for the Titans and ranked 47th overall in 29:39.In men's soccer, junior Pasquale Reino (Neshannock) had a goal and assist to help the Titans blank Pitt-Greensburg, 5-0, in their home opener to stay unbeaten. Reino assisted on Todd Fisher's goal that made it 2-0, then came back to score to pad the lead to 3-0.In women's soccer, an area trio helped Westminster beat Capital, 2-1, in overtime. Junior forward Tammy Newell (Hubbard) scored the game-winner in the sixth minute of overtime on an assist from sophomore Danielle White (Howland). The Titans had tied the score at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by sophomore Sharon Griffin (Canfield) in the 65th minute. It was Griffin's first goal of the season.Shannon Haines (Neshannock), a senior on the women's tennis team, scored her first win of the season to help the Titans beat Washington & amp; Jefferson, 8-1. Haines teamed with Brenda Rowland to win at No. 2 doubles, helping Westminster to its first victory after two losses. Haines and Rowland show a 1-2 record at No. 2 doubles.
Baldwin-Wallace: Senior Nick Styn (Hubbard), a member of the men's cross country team, placed 50th overall in the Mel Boldt Invitational Meet at Bowling Green State University in a season-best time of 27:09.18.The women's golf team lists sophomores Julie DeChristofaro (Niles) and Jessica Hettrick (Hubbard). DeChristofaro ranks fourth on the team in stroke average with 95.25, including a season-low 87 at the Grand Valley State Invitational. Hettrick is seventh with 108.25. In the Defiance tournament, DeChristofaro had a 100 and Hettrick 110 as the Yellow Jackets placed fifth out of eight teams. Last year, B-W was 10th at the NCAA Division III national tournament.In football, sophomore Sean Baker (United) is a starter at offensive tackle, while sophomore outside linebacker Pat Pearson (Girard), junior tackle Brian Weber (Sharpsville), and junior inside linebacker Ross Maynard (Newton Falls) are seeing action on defense. Freshman Matt Walker (Springfield) is a punt returner. Pearson is splitting time at outside linebacker and special teams, and has three tackles and one QB sack. Weber played in a 45-7 win at Adrian, and had two tackles. Maynard is dividing duties between inside linebacker and special teams.In volleyball, Allison Carson (Springfield) is a member of the junior varsity.John Carroll: John Clark (Ursuline), a senior wide receiver on the football team, leads the Blue Streaks in receiving. Through three games, Clark has 21 catches (7 per game) for 325 yards and one TD, as John Carroll posted a 2-1 record. Clark also led John Carroll in reception yards (108.3 a game), punt returns with seven for 72 yards or 10.3 a game, and in all-purpose yards with 417 yards for 139 per game. Clark is tied for No. 1 in the OAC in pass catches and is No. 4 three categories -- reception yards, punt returns and all-purpose yards.Mount Union: Holly Coleman (Canfield), a senior outside hitter with the volleyball team, leads the team and ranks No. 3 in the OAC in kills per game with 4.62. Coleman led the Purple Raiders to two victories last week with 34 kills for a .456 hitting percentage with three service aces, 15 digs and two blocks.
