BOARDMAN -- The Ohio Motorist Safety Foundation and AAA's approved auto repair specialists will provide free car safety checks to insured motorists from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the AAA Mahoning County office at 1275 Boardman-Canfield Road. Certified child passenger safety technicians will install free booster seats for income-eligible families from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Boosters are needed so seat belts fit properly on children who weigh more than 40 pounds but less than 80 pounds and are shorter than 4 feet 9 inches tall, according to the safety foundation. The seats are provided by Ford Motor Co. as part of its Boost America program. A limited number of the seats are available. Call (800) 845-0375 to qualify and reserve a seat.
Church festival
POLAND -- Festival-goers can see how apple butter is made at the Woodworth Church of the Brethren from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the church, 30 E. Western Reserve Road. Also offered will be samples of apple and pumpkin butter, and the items will be sold. The festival also features a bake sale, craft sale, music and children's games at 1 p.m. A hot dog lunch will be provided.
Credit card fraud
YOUNGSTOWN -- A retired Youngstown woman told police she's the victim of fraud after an unauthorized $4,000 charge to her credit card. The woman called police Friday after the charge appeared on her monthly statement. Police said a promotional check that the woman said she did not endorse was cashed in Walnut, Calif.
Suspicious activity
YOUNGSTOWN -- A security guard at Phantom Fireworks, 555 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., told police a "suspicious man" carrying a can of lighter fluid asked to speak to someone about flash powder at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The man didn't specifically say that he wanted to buy the explosive, but managers at the fireworks company wanted to report it in light of the recent terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, police reports state.
Crop Walk event
HUBBARD -- Hubbard Christians in Action will have its annual walk as part of the national Crop Walk on Oct. 14. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 59 Orchard Ave. The walk starts at 2 and goes from the church to the track at Reed Middle School and then to The Meadowlands. Zoning board vacancy
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township officials are accepting r & eacute;sum & eacute;s from residents interested in serving as an alternate on the zoning board of appeals. R & eacute;sum & eacute;s can be dropped at the township administration building in South Range Plaza or they can be mailed to the zoning inspector, P.O. Access to be blocked
MERCER, Pa. -- Handicapped people will have to make special arrangements to visit Mercer County offices beginning Monday, when construction will bar vehicle traffic to the courthouse's handicap-accessible entrance. There will still be pedestrian access. Commissioners said those needing assistance should call the courthouse office they want to visit.
