NILES -- Reconstruction of Holford Street is expected to start next month and wrap up at the end of November.
The city's board of control awarded a $113,417 contract Wednesday to Schimley Excavating Inc., of Niles, for the project. Mark Hess, city coordinator of grants, engineering and development, said he plans to issue a notice-to-proceed to the company the second week of October.
The company would have 45 days to complete the work.
The city has applied for a $99,000 Community Development Block Grant for the Holford project. The city already has allocated $73,300 for street improvements. Projects using CDBG funds primarily benefit low-to-moderate-income families.
The project is to replace brick pavement on Holford Avenue with asphalt between Maple Avenue and Plant Street.
The city replaced the bricks with asphalt on Holford between Warren Avenue and Maple Street last year. New curbs, driveway approaches and sidewalks also were installed.
Council members last month passed legislation allowing Samuel Natoli, service director, to advertise for bids and award a contract for the project. The board of control includes Natoli, Mayor Ralph Infante and Donald Allen, safety director.
