EAST PALESTINE -- School officials are accepting nominations through Monday for the first class of the East Palestine City School District Distinguished Hall of Fame.
Superintendent Jeff Richardson said the first class will have 10 members. In 2002 and thereafter, seven inductees will be chosen, he said.
This year's class will be inducted at the Feb. 15 basketball game and honored at a brunch the following day, Richardson said.
A committee consisting of one senior, two board of education members, three administrators and five community residents will make the selections, Richardson said.
Qualifications: To qualify, individuals must have made a significant and recognizable contribution to society or their profession; must have been recognized for performance in the arts, athletics, government or public service; advanced the cause of education, science or medicine through practice or research, or have been recognized for other outstanding achievement.
Individuals who are not East Palestine High School alumni may be nominated if they have distinguished themselves through meritorious service contributing to the prestige and progress of the school district and the community.
Alumni are eligible for induction if they graduated at least 15 years prior to being nominated, Richardson said.
Candidates may be nominated and inducted posthumously.
Nominations: Richardson said Wednesday he has received about 40 nomination forms.
Nominations must be submitted on an official form. Forms of those not chosen will be kept and re-evaluated yearly, he said.
Nomination forms are available at Richardson's office and on the district's Web site at www.EPSCHOOLS.K12.OH.US.
Anyone using the Web site must download and print the form, then submit it in person or by mail.
