CITY COUNCIL Committee meeting

Youngstown City Council's Buildings and Grounds Committee conducted the following business Wednesday:
U Instructed Carmen Conglose, deputy director of public works, to advertise for bids for an estimated $248,000 for asbestos removal at the former Washington School, the longest-standing closed school in the city, which has been vacant for more than 20 years and is to be demolished at a cost of $100,000.
U Set a 5 p.m. meeting Oct. 3 with Mayor George McKelvey and Finance Director Barbara Burtner concerning municipal court renovations and whether and how the project could be funded.
U Heard from Conglose that $242,000 worth of sidewalk replacement in a 60-day project is to begin Oct. 8, with work to be suspended and continued in the spring if weather conditions dictate.
U Heard Councilman James E. Fortune, D-6th, finance committee chairman, suggest regularly assessing property owners small amounts, such as an additional $12 or $13 a year, in their taxes for sidewalk replacement.
U Learned that work is to begin in two to three weeks on a 90-day, $121,477 renovation of council chambers.
