Arena board appointee
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mayor George M. McKelvey named today Charles Sammarone, president of city council, as one of his three appointees to the arena board.
Sammarone also is president of the city's downtown redevelopment agency, the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp. The arena board is overseeing development of an anticipated $40 million civic center to be built between the Market Street and South Avenue bridges downtown.
He replaces the Rev. Gary Frost, who resigned earlier this year from the 13-member panel to take a new job out of town.
Assault arrests
LAKE MILTON -- A Lake Milton man and his brother, of Berlin Township, were arrested Tuesday on warrants for assault.
Police say Randy Sallaz, 20, of Thrush Drive, Lake Milton, and Richard Sallaz, 31, of Leffingwell Road, Berlin Township, attacked a man who was trying to break up a domestic dispute Sunday night at his neighbors' house.
The man's collar bone was broken and he suffered bruises on his face as a result of the attack. Police didn't have enough information from witnesses to arrest the brothers until Tuesday.
The Sallaz brothers are set to appear Thursday morning in Mahoning County Court in Austintown.
Firearm possession
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury here has indicted a Youngstown man on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment says Derrick Davis, 34, of Compton Lane, possessed a .38-caliber pistol July 28 after having been convicted of cocaine possession Jan. 8 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The case is being prosecuted by the Youngstown-based Assistant U.S. Atty. Cynthia Westcott Rice after an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Stalking, harassment
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury here has returned a four-count indictment charging a Youngstown man with interstate stalking, cyberstalking, theft of mail and making harassing or threatening telephone calls. The indictment says Eric S. Bowker, 36, for whom no exact address was given, traveled from Ohio to West Virginia to harass the victim, used the mail and Internet to intentionally instill fear in the victim, possessed the victim's credit card statement, which was stolen from the mail, and anonymously made repeated harassing interstate telephone calls to the victim.
The interstate stalking charge stems from a provision of the federal Violence Against Women Act, which Congress enacted in 1996, and the cyberstalking charge stems from an amendment to that act, which was enacted last year.
The case is being prosecuted by Youngstown-based Assistant U.S. Atty. Cynthia Westcott Rice after an FBI investigation.
Marijuana in school
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 11-year-old North Jackson boy accused of giving another pupil a marker filled with suspected marijuana was taken into custody Tuesday by a Mahoning County deputy sheriff at Adams Alternative School on Cooper Street. When questioned, the boy said he sold the marijuana, which he found in woods behind his Palmyra Road house, for $6 and expected payment later. The North Jackson boy was released to his grandfather pending the filing of charges at the juvenile justice center. The pupil he gave the marijuana to, a 15-year-old Lake Milton boy, was issued a citation for possession of marijuana and released to his guardian.
Theft from supermarket
AUSTINTOWN -- A 43-year-old township man was arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing $135 in over-the-counter medications from Santisi's IGA on Mahoning Avenue, police reports show. A store employee saw the man place 28 boxes of Tylenol, Marquee acid reducer and Zantac into his jacket pockets. When stopped by the employee as he left the store, the man admitted taking the drugs and asked if he could make restitution. He was charged with theft and faces a hearing Thursday in county court in Austintown.
