NORTH JACKSON -- A public memorial service will take place today for those killed or missing as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks. The service will be at 7 p.m. at the fire station on state Route 45. Township officials are expected to attend and speak.
Patrols back to normal
AUSTINTOWN -- Police here are no longer making extra patrols of businesses run by Americans of Middle Eastern descent or the Sikh religion.
Chief Gordon Ellis said he asked his officers to pay additional attention to those businesses to prevent violence in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. However, because no violence has been reported, "we're back to a more usual patrol pattern," he said.
Cruise ship safety
TORONTO, Ont. -- Cruise ship security has increased since terrorists attacked the United States, according to a press release from cruiseselloffs.com. Vacationers will notice increased inspection of luggage, additional security personnel and controls and canine inspections, which means embarkation and debarkation will take longer. Photo identification is required for all guests and crew members. Passports are the best form of identification.
Turnpike donations
BEREA -- Those who travel the Ohio Turnpike have an opportunity to contribute cash toward relief efforts stemming from the terrorist attacks. For the next month, donations may be placed in barrels bearing the turnpike's "Blinky" mascot at 14 turnpike service plazas, including the Mahoning Valley and Glacier Hills service plazas in Springfield Township, Mahoning County.
Candlelight vigil
WASHINGTONVILLE -- A candlelight vigil will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at VFW Post 5532 here in remembrance of the Sept. 11 tragedies. Post Commander Lee Pratt, Past State Commander Jim Dickens and post Chaplain Phil Kinsey will speak. The public is invited.
