Baby's death probed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Detectives are investigating the death of an 11-month-old girl whose mother told police that her daughter choked while drinking formula at their DuPont Street home Monday.
The baby, Latysha Jackson, was pronounced dead at 1:22 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Health Center, reports show. The mother's cousin told police that he tried to administer CPR. An ambulance paramedic told police that he noticed white flakes in the baby's right ear and possible vaginal trauma. The case has been turned over to the Mahoning County coroner.
Truck theft thwarted
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old McGuffey Road boy caught trying to drive away in a semi tractor-trailer was arrested Monday on charges of grand theft auto and escape. The semi had been parked along a fence at Paragon Industries on Albert Street while the driver waited to pull it to the dock. The driver, who had been chatting with a Paragon employee, saw the truck move and jumped on the running board. He pulled the boy out of the truck and held him for police. The boy, once let out of the cruiser at the juvenile justice center, ran and had to be chased and caught by police.
Steel door stolen
CANFIELD -- A door was stolen off its hinges from a house that is under construction on Colly Top Lane. A construction worker reported that the $200 steel door was taken from the house late last week. The door led from the garage to the house.
Theft at country club
CANFIELD -- Mahoning County deputy sheriffs are investigating the theft of money paid to a photographer at Tippecanoe Country Club. The photographer, of Painesville, reported that she took pictures of couples at a class reunion Saturday night at the country club.
The couples were asked to place money in an envelope if they wanted to buy the picture.
Some couples also wrote credit card numbers on the envelopes.
When the reunion had ended, the photographer noticed that several of the envelopes were missing.
Sky Bank ATM damaged
BOARDMAN -- An automated teller machine at Sky Bank, 711 Boardman-Canfield Road, sustained $5,000 in damage but no cash was taken in a thwarted theft attempt.
According to police reports, the bank manager discovered the damage about 8:30 a.m. Friday.
The ATM's face plate was destroyed and interior mechanical parts damaged when the would-be thief forced entry by cutting around the card slot but failed to access the money canisters.
The thief apparently covered the machine's video camera with duct tape to prevent the theft from being recorded, and affixed an out-of-order sign to the machine to delay discovery of the damage.
Marijuana charges
POLAND -- A 17-year-old boy was arrested for possession of marijuana after he was seen making a drug buy near the intersection of state Route 170 and U.S. Route 224 just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18. A witness notified police after she saw the boy making what appeared to be a drug buy from two men in a parked car. Police apprehended the boy a short time later and discovered a plastic bag of marijuana when they asked him to empty his pockets.
Drug abuse instruments
YOUNGSTOWN -- After stopping Sean P. Ungaro, 28, of Fifth Avenue Saturday afternoon for going through a stop sign and speeding on the North Side, police issued a summons charging him with possession of drug abuse instruments. Police found a hypodermic syringe and two lighters in his pants pocket. The officers said he told them he is a heroin addict. Police also said they found two syringes and a metal spoon in the car, and he told them the substance on the spoon was OxyContin, a controlled substance, which he got in Austintown. Ungaro was released on his own recognizance after arraignment Monday in municipal court and will be back in court Thursday for a pretrial. He is a son of former mayor Patrick Ungaro.
Candlelight ceremony
WARREN -- A candlelight ceremony to remember domestic violence victims and celebrate those who have survived will be Monday, the National Day of Unity, at 7 p.m. at Court House Square.
The event, sponsored by Someplace Safe, a Trumbull County domestic violence shelter for women and their children, will include formerly battered women talking about their experiences, as well as poetry and music.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
