CAMPBELL -- A 22-year-old Army sergeant frightened off an unknown number of attackers by firing shots into the air at his Regent Street home Sunday morning, police said.
Residents told police they heard four to seven gunshots and saw three vehicles leave the area.
The man's home and a tire of a vehicle were struck by gunfire, police said.
The matter is under investigation. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.
Bad check investigation
CANFIELD -- Village police are investigating a 30-year-old Salem man accused of writing bad checks, police said.
The man wrote four checks in August, for $500, $1,200, $1,800 and $4,000, that were returned to First Star Bank on East Main Street for insufficient funds.
The man told police that he had been contracted by an area concert venue to book acts. But, he said, the company backed out of the contract, leaving him without the funds to back up the checks he had written, police reports show.
Police in Austintown said they are investigating a similar complaint there.
The man has a criminal history in Maryland, California and Florida, according to police reports.
Bomb threat reported
AUSTINTOWN -- A 27-year-old employee of the Bo-Rics hair salon on Mahoning Avenue reported to police Friday that she received a bomb threat over the telephone.
The woman said she answered the phone at around 3:30 p.m. and an electronic voice said a someone was trying to call collect. She heard a deep male voice and then a woman's voice saying, "Don't answer the call. It is a bomb threat."
Police said nothing was found at the store.
Arrested in Austintown
AUSTINTOWN -- Three Warren men were arrested outside Motel 6 on Seventy-six Drive late Sunday after police saw a loaded .22-cal revolver in the car in which they were riding, police said.
Police stopped the 1981 Buick and discovered the driver, 21, was wanted in Newton Falls on a warrant for complicity to burglary. One passenger, 22, was wanted in Warren on a charge of failure to appear in court on various motor vehicle infractions, according to police reports. A second passenger, 42, was arrested and charged with trespassing after a Rebel Lounge employee said he had asked him to leave the lounge.
A fourth man, 22, also of Warren, was not arrested.
Police had seen the revolver on the floor of the car while it was parked at the Motel 6. They stopped the vehicle around 11:15 p.m., after seeing the men enter the car. The revolver was then found in the glove box.
All four men denied ownership, and the gun was confiscated.
Police await ruling
HUBBARD -- A ruling is pending from the Trumbull County Coroner's office in the death of a Cortland man found in the township. Police said the 47-year-old, whom they declined to identify, was found late Saturday afternoon in an area in the eastern end of the township near Fox-North Road.
Commissions honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Local emergency planning commissions from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties will be among several from across Ohio to be honored Wednesday for their performance in 2000.
They are being recognized by the Ohio State Emergency Response Commission for their ability to deal with hazardous materials.
The awards will be presented during the annual Local Emergency Planning Commission conference in Cincinnati.
