HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A 16-year-old Farrell boy was killed in a one-car accident on North Water Avenue.
Police said Dishon Campbell of 1155 Wallace Ave. was pronounced dead after being pulled from the car by police and firefighters.
They said the car crashed into a tree on the 1800 block of North Water Avenue at about 1:32 a.m. Sunday.
Investigators said the Chevrolet Corsica left the east side of the road and crashed into the tree.
Firefighters had to put out an engine fire before getting Campbell out of the car, police said.
No one else was in the car, they said.
Man gets 15 monthsfor counterfeiting
PITTSBURGH -- A Lawrence County man was sentenced to 15 months in prison in U.S. Federal Court. Jeremiah Bish, 19, of RD 1, Enon Valley, pleaded guilty to counterfeiting and conspiracy.
According to information presented at his sentencing, Bish and Gerald Calvin Murberger II manufactured $1,230 in counterfeit United States currency in September 2000. They then divided the counterfeit money and some was given to another person, Jamie Leigh Smith. All three spent it at various New Castle businesses, court records said.
Murberger pleaded guilty to two counts of counterfeiting on July 2 and is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 28. Smith was placed in a pretrial diversion program for 12 months in lieu of prosecution. In addition to his prison time, Bish will serve three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay restitution to the businesses at which he passed bogus bills.
Theft reported
SALEM -- Someone entered an unlocked residence in the 200 block of E. Third Street and stole about $500 in video game equipment, city police said this morning. The theft occurred Saturday.
Man tackles suspect
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police say a man tried to run off with a restaurant cash register, but was tackled by the eatery's owner. Randal Hugh Bartley, 45, of Old Pittsburgh Road faces charges of burglary, receiving stolen property, theft by unlawful taking and criminal mischief. Police said they were called to Mary's Restaurant on East Long Avenue at 1:19 a.m. Sunday and found owner Samer Mansour struggling with a man outside and a cash register nearby on the street. Mansour, who lives above the restaurant, told police that his mother heard noises and he went down to investigate and saw Bartley running from the restaurant with the cash register. Police said they found broken glass from the restaurant's door and suspect that is how Bartley got in. District Justice J. V. Lamb ordered Bartley held in Lawrence County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.
Officials investigatetwo suspicious fires
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Investigators are looking into two suspicious blazes.
Fire Chief James Donston said 418 N. Cascade St. went up in flames at 3:39 a.m. Saturday. The two-story house is owned by Holbein Rentals, which had a small office on the first floor, and was rented to Anita Ward. No one was home when the blaze started in the first floor living room, Donston said. Damage was estimated at $60,000. A state fire marshal was called to investigate, he said.
A second blaze this morning has been ruled arson, Donston said. A vacant house on Blanchard Street caught fire at 3:17 a.m. Details and the owner's name were not available this morning. Donston said the house had been condemned in May by the city.
No injuries were reported in either fire.
