Village woes
This village of 327, which straddles Mahoning and Columbiana counties, has had its share of political squabbles. Here is a sampling from the 1990s until now.
October 1991: Mayor Stanley McMurray resigns. No one filed to run for the job in the November 1991 general election.January 1992: Mayor Charles Morrow announces he will resign as mayor on March 1.July 1992: Council accepts the resignations of a council member and the village water official.September 1992: Village Councilman Timothy White resigns.October 1992: Council names Mike Donnalley to one of three vacant council seats.November 1992: Council names Robert Pitts to fill one of two vacant council seats.June 1993: Council accepts the resignations of council president Patrick Snow and clerk-treasurer Jeri Bertolette. Snow will later be elected mayor.September 1995: Police Chief Jack Fay resigns for health reasons. William Krolopp named chief soon after.July 1997: Krolopp resigns, then reconsiders and decides to remain on the job.April 1998: Keith Trittschuh is named police department administrator.May 1998: Snow puts Krolopp on unpaid administrative leave until police department's problems are resolved. A few days later, Trittschuh is named police chief.November 1998: Village voters turn down three levies, including one for the police department. A few days later, Snow talks about resigning.August 1999: Snow says he won't seek a fourth term as mayor.September 1999: Councilwoman Gayle Trummer resigns to devote more time to her private business. A few days later, council dissolves its fire department.November 1999: Poll worker Patricia Mellott says she did not tamper with write-in ballots while working nor did she provide her mother, incumbent Councilwoman Theresa Allison, with secret information.November 2000: Problems within the police department reach a head when seven of 10 officers resign until department's issues are resolved. A few days later, Frank Herring is named interim police chief.December 2000: Council approves Mayor Charles Morrow's pick of patrolman J.R. Blakeman as police chief.September 2001: Morrow announces he will resign as mayor effective Oct. 2. Two years remain on his term.
