Police chief: Car was stolen near New York

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- The case of the abandoned car found hidden in a ravine in Shenango Township got more curious Thursday.
Police Chief Ronald Preston said he learned that the car owned by a Sloatsburg, N.Y., man, whose name is of Middle Eastern origin, was reported stolen from an auto service center in Pearl River, N.Y., about 12 hours after the terrorist attack that leveled the World Trade Center.
Pearl River is just 20 minutes from downtown Manhattan, Preston said.
The car, with the keys in the ignition, turned up abandoned in some tall weeds in a ravine about 300 yards off Buckwalter Road in Shenango Township shortly before 8 a.m. Monday.
No one could be found in the area, and the police and the FBI want to know how it got there and who was driving it, Preston said.
FBI probe: The FBI did send an agent to look at the scene and gather some items found outside the car, he said.
He said the car, a 1987 Camaro, was reported stolen by the owner of the service center, and the owner's wife contacted police in New York asking if the car had been recovered.
Preston declined to identify the owner.
The car remains impounded and hasn't been searched because authorities have no probable cause that it was involved in any crime, he said.
