CROSS COUNTRY Malone Invitational next test for runners

The Suburban League championships will be run Tuesday.
A dozen area teams will compete in the 33rd Malone Invitational cross country meet Saturday in Canton.
All 39 Suburban League schools will have athletes participating in the league championships at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Tuesday.
Badger, Boardman, Canfield, Columbiana, Fitch, Lakeview, Lisbon, Mooney, Niles, Salem, South Range and United will run at Malone.
The Division III girls race is scheduled for 9 a.m. and will be followed at 9:30 by the Div. III boys. The rest of the schedule is: Div. I girls, noon; Div. I boys, 12:30; Div. II girls, 1, and Div. II boys, 1:30.
At last week's Boardman Spartan Invitational, Tom Albani of Boardman recorded one of the area's top times (16 minutes, 32.8 seconds) as he finished sixth. The Spartans' Matt Jones was fourth (17:31.4), helping his team to sixth place in Div. I with 303 points.
Sean Williams (17:27) and Ray Butler (17:30) should challenge for honors.
Top individuals: Other individuals expected to contend in the various boys divisions are Boardman's Jones and Todd DiMascio, Mooney's Joe Taylor (16:37), who was fifth in the Div. II Boardman field, and teammates Eric Moss and Dan Finnerty and Salem's Shane Harding and Robert Vogt.
Some area girls who should contend are Canfield's Kristen Piersante, Fitch's Kaitlin Kempe, Boardman's Brittany Durkin, Mooney's Val Zajac and Lisbon's Katrina Brickner.
At the Fairgrounds in Canfield, the Suburban League's girls race is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and the boys race is set for 5:05. Middle school runs will follow.
The run for the girls title will include last year's champ, McDonald, with West Branch, Boardman, Fitch, Mooney and Girard challenging.
Regular season champs were Girard (13-0) in the North Division and Boardman (15-1) in the South Division.
Racing for individual laurels will be 2000 champ Zajac of Mooney, West Branch's Lisa Davies and Megan Cingcade, twins Jen and Jess Wenhold of McDonald, Piersante of Canfield, Kempe of Fitch and Brickner of Lisbon.
It appears the boys run will again be contested with defending champ Girard, along with Maplewood, McDonald, Fitch, Boardman and Mooney, which placed second through sixth, respectively, last year.
The regular season champs were Maplewood (19-0) in the North Division and Boardman (18-0) in the South Division.
Top contenders should be David Pykare (16:40) and Paul Moser (16:51) of Maplewood, the Div. III champs at Boardman; Springfield's Dave Mealy (17:03); McDonald's Joe Kunkel (17:18.2) and Jason Corman (17:18.7); Boardman's Albani; Mooney's Taylor and Fitch's Williams and Butler.
