Tractor driver killed
JAMESTOWN, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said a Greene Township man died after a tractor he was operating overturned on an embankment and rolled onto him.
Gregory Painter, 44, of 157 N. Good Hope Road, was injured at his home around 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said. He was pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m. by Cris Loutzenhiser, Mercer County deputy coroner, who said Painter died of internal injuries.
Line drains water
SALINEVILLE -- Water service was expected to be restored by noon today to about 1,200 village residents. The village has been without water since an 8-inch supply line broke late Monday, draining about 340,000 gallons of water from the village's water tower, village Administrator Jeff Lewis said today.
The line's age contributed to its breaking, he added. A repair was made Tuesday, but it has taken time to refill the tower. Alpine Springs, a bottled water company in the village, provided water for residents. Sky Bank donated portable toilets.
Jailed on sex charge
SHARON, Pa. -- Andrew L. Bacon, 43, of Custer-Orangeville Road, Burghill, was jailed with bond set at $50,000 after his arrest last week on a warrant charging him with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse.
Police said Bacon is accused of having indecent sexual contact Sept. 3 with a 31-year-old city woman in a house in the 200 block of Sharpsville Avenue. The woman was asleep at the time.
Dog-shooting charges
SHARON, Pa. -- Greg Coleman, 35, of Hall Avenue, was freed on his own recognizance Monday after his arrest on a warrant charging him with cruelty to animals and discharge of a firearm in the city.
Police said Coleman is accused of using a shotgun to shoot and kill a 150-pound Rotweiller that bit a friend of his Sept. 2 in the 300 block of Liberty Street. The friend, Greg Davis, was feeding the dog for a neighbor while the neighbor was out of town and the dog attacked Davis, biting him on the face and causing an injury that required stitches, police said.
Fire department grant
EAST PALESTINE -- The East Palestine Fire Department has received a $13,365 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Program. The money will be used to buy personal protective fire equipment.
American Heart Walk
The American Heart Walk for Mahoning/Northern Columbiana counties and Trumbull County will be Saturday at Boardman Township Park and Cafaro Field in Niles. Registration will be at 8 a.m. and the walk will begin at 9 a.m. at both venues. Money is raised via pledges and donations.
Handgun stolen
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said a .22-caliber H & amp;R Sportsman Model 999 nine-shot revolver valued at $225 was taken Monday night from a home on Osborn Road in Salem Township.
A brown leather holster, an undisclosed amount of .22-caliber long rifle ammunition and a can of tobacco also were taken in the burglary, police said.
Sentence not shortened
YOUNGSTOWN -- Judge Maureen A. Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court has denied a request from Joseph Maderitz to suspend the balance of his sentence in the county jail.
Maderitz, 32, of North Hazelwood Avenue, was sentenced in August to 90 days for selling the party drug Ecstasy. He is a former probation officer at the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center but was not accused of selling drugs to juveniles there.
After serving less than a month of the sentence, Maderitz filed a motion asking Judge Cronin to suspend the balance. She denied the request Monday.
Kids health clinic
BOARDMAN -- Kids Day American health clinic will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the offices of Drs. Heather Haverfield and Richard Rogan at 843 Boardman-Canfield Road.
Events will include ID cards and fingerprinting for children, and free dental screening and scoliosis checks. Donations will be accepted for the New York City Red Cross.
