SHARON SCHOOLS Superintendent gets 11-week medical leave

The board gave the business manager a raise to $73,000 a year.
SHARON, Pa. -- The Sharon City School Board has granted Superintendent Richard A. Rossi an 11-week medical leave of absence.
Rossi, 52, suffered a heart attack Aug. 10 and was a patient in Hamot Medical Center in Erie for a time.
He has since been discharged and is recuperating at home but undergoing therapy, school officials said. His leave of absence was made retroactive to Sept. 6 and will end Nov. 21.
In the meantime, his duties will be picked up by Donna DeBonis, supervisor of curriculum and instruction, who will also remain responsible for her position.
DeBonis did double duty as acting superintendent several years ago following the resignation of Donald Thomas. She filled the post for several months until Rossi was hired.
School directors said DeBonis will be granted a stipend for her additional duties but the amount hasn't been determined yet.
In other matters, the board:
U Granted Business Manager James Wolf a nearly $5,500 pay raise to bring him in line with his peers in surrounding school districts. "He was notably very low [on the pay scale]," said Dom Russo, board vice president. Wolf was making $67,537 and will go to $73,000 annually, retroactive to July 1.
U Asked for a list of all student field trips in light of the terrorist attack in New York city last week. The high school choir makes an annual trip to New York each year for the Thanksgiving Day parade and Russo said the trip should remain scheduled, barring any further problems. School Director Kathy Hall said the board hasn't really discussed the issue yet, and she isn't sure how many board members and how many parents will still support the trip. New York might not even have the parade this year, she said.
